Job Description


Summary: Provides in-house Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) direction, support and guidance to the facility. Ensures site complies with applicable EH&S regulations as well as Corporate H&S policies. As a member of the Site Leadership Team represents the EH&S function creating / driving EHS strategy for the site. This position would also contribute to the larger EHS Pharma Services Group network to develop long term strategy for the organization, and serve as a coach / mentor to EHS leaders at smaller sites. As a larger manufacturing facility within the geographic region, the Director, EHS, would represent the Thermo Fisher Scientific organization at local / regional industry groups / committees. Essential Functions:

  • Provides strategic direction to the Leadership Team and senior level leaders at the site related to Environment, Health and Safety programs to drive continuous improvement.
  • Provides guidance / support to the site on new business opportunities and projects
  • Represents the Leadership Team when necessary at Tier Boards, Meetings, Townhalls etc
  • Reports to Vice President and General Manager of the Site
  • A member of the Site Leadership Team
  • Leads the Environment, Health and Safety Program at the site
  • Oversees the development and implementation of EHS Policies, Procedures and Programs
  • Lead, coach & mentor a site team of EHS professionals
  • Create strategic plan for the site to drive continuous EHS improvement
  • Leads the Emergency Response team for the site
  • Leads the chemical containment strategy and combustible dust program at the site
  • Develop Best Practice programs
  • Report Metrics to Corporate and Site Leadership Team
  • Point of contact for EHS matters with site staff, regulatory agencies, and clients
  • Leads the Occupational Health Centre, including implementation of the Occupational Health Program
  • Medical surveillance, WSIB case management, return to work
  • Health & wellness initiatives
  • Leads the Site Security Portfolio
  • Lead the Site Security Department and ensure adequate resources are provided to support site security needs
  • Partner with Corporate Security to identify, prioritize, develop and implement physical security, emergency preparedness, and safety strategies that align with industry standards
  • Manage & maintain security technology standards to ensure compliance with applicable laws and corporate requirements
  • Lead strategic initiatives to reduce physical security risk at the site, in partnership with key stakeholders
  • Develop and manage all site security operating procedures
  • Active participants in the PSG EHS network to provide strategic input to help drive the EHS program within the business group.
  • Assist in coaching / mentoring smaller sites within the network and when necessary provide support / support
  • Assists Divisional EHS Leaders when necessary
  • Participates on local advisory committees, industry committees and networks to promote Thermo Fisher Scientific and to represent the company as required.
  • Identifies industry (including regulatory) changes that may affect site operations and assists to develop and implement plans to meet compliance requirements.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates staff to ensure the efficient operation of the function. Works with and advises staff on administrative policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences or related field
  • Master of Science degree in Industrial Hygiene an asset
  • EH&S Certificate or Diploma
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional)
  • Other Professional designation in Health & Safety
Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of previous Environment, Health and Safety experience in an industrial or related environment.
  • Preferred 5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years experience managing direct reports.
Equivalency: Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proven people management experience. Demonstrated success in successive leadership positions. Well versed in environment, health and safety legislation. Proven ability to coach and develop staff as well as the technical ability to coordinate departmental business activities. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to motivate and lead. Well organized and detail oriented. Excellent computer and database skills. Excellent presentation skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficiency with the English Language.

Carry out all duties within strict compliance to Patheon quality systems SOP\'s and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion. Actively engage in and adhere to departmental systems in order to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines of deliverables in a proactive manner. Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge in related field.
