What you'll do





The Director, Environment leads the portfolio responsible for strategic and operational management of BC Hydro's


environmental and social related risks. As a senior leader of the company, the Director is responsible for a budget of


approximately $48 million, and oversees the development and implementation of strategic plans, practices, and standards


to ensure compliance in operations and capital projects. The Director's business unit is also responsible for delivering on


regulatory commitments that support BC Hydro water licenses through the Water License Requirements Program and the


Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program. The Director develops strategic relationships with First Nations, government


regulators and external stakeholders, and acts as representative of BC Hydro on senior committees. Reporting to the SVP,


Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery, this role oversees an organization of about 127 union and non-union employees with


six direct reports.




The successful candidate will:




Work across all business groups to facilitate environmental risk management for fisheries, wildlife, pollution prevention,
greenhouse gas management, and heritage requirements through the integration of environmental and heritage


considerations into the business.




Be accountable for defining and establishing governance and environmental compliance requirements across projects and
operations, including Site C, to ensure consistency in strategy, decision making, practices, and controls. This includes


responsibility for the Environment Strategy and Statement of Environmental Principles for the company, overseeing and


reporting on environmental performance, and providing authoritative counsel to executives and business group leaders on


strategies to maintain regulatory compliance and facility authorizations.




Be accountable for providing environmental and permitting services and expertise to support timely delivery of capital
projects, operations and maintenance planning at the plant and field level across the province. This includes support in the


implementation and execution of work and the management and mitigation of any resulting environmental impacts;




Be accountable for delivery of BC Hydro's many obligations to monitor and mitigate operational and historical footprint
impacts through delivery of the Water License Requirements Program that support the Water Use Planning process, and


delivery of the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (in partnership with First Nations, provincial and federal agencies,


and public representatives).




Establish long term priorities and contribute to overall strategic business direction for the organization. Lead proactive
thinking, development, and the initiation of progressive environmental planning in projects and operations.




Be responsible for the oversight, implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System.


Develop strategic relationships with First Nations, Senior Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, Ministry of
Environment, BC Energy Regulator, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada officials on matters related to the planning,


permitting and operation of all BC Hydro assets, Compensation Programs and Water License Requirements.




Develop and maintain good relations with government agencies, other utilities and environmental groups to effectively assess and address emerging environmental issues, regulatory changes, and evolving technologies.




Be accountable for the Quarterly and Annual Environmental Management Review process. The purpose of the Annual
Review is to assess the suitability and effectiveness of the Environmental Management System, to set environmental


direction for the company, and to ensure implementation of applicable decisions.




Provide leadership and coaching to a team of both union and non-union staff.


Prepare annual management plans; provide approval for projects and maintain control of expenditures in accordance with
BC Hydro's administrative procedures.

What you bring




Bachelor's degree in a field of Natural Resource Management or Sciences, Environment or Sustainability, Business
Administration, Public Administration, Engineering, or Law. Masters preferred.




A minimum of 15+ years' experience in a relevant environment related field, demonstrated through a deep understanding
of the environmental and heritage permitting regime in BC and Canada, and experience in establishing and leading


environmental and regulatory oversight and support to operations, capital projects and maintenance programs.




Exceptional leadership skills coupled with experience leading large business units or organizations.


Ability to represent BC Hydro strategically on various internal and/or external committees and task forces.


Sound business knowledge including financial/operational/strategic planning and management.


Sound knowledge of environmental, social-economic and public interest issues and their impact on area of expertise.


Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to encourage innovation, collaboration, risk taking and creative
thinking in others through performance coaching/mentoring/recognition.




Superior verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to build solid relationships, conduct
negotiations and make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.




Evidence of relevant and progressive work experience.


Proven leadership and consensus building skills, focused on achievement of measurable outcomes.


Ability to think creatively and strategically in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.


Demonstrated change management experience as well as superior facilitation skills.

What else you should know




Please note this is a full-time permanent (FTR) opportunity located at our Edmonds location in Burnaby, BC.


The preferred headquarter location for this opportunity is Burnaby, however we may be willing to consider other British
Columbia headquarter locations depending on operational requirements and this can be discussed further in the selection


process. Please note this flexibility would also be subject to workspace availability.




Required to travel regularly within BC.
