  • This position, reporting to the AVP Innovation & Research, is responsible for establishing the goals and direction for the provision of services to students and external clients that create economic value through viable student/external business opportunities and strategic intellectual property (IP) portfolios.
  • Strategy and Execution:
  • Develop, lead and execute the goals, objectives, and strategic direction for Durham College\xe2\x80\x99s entrepreneurship and intellectual property (IP) services agenda in accordance with the College\xe2\x80\x99s mission, vision, and strategic mandate, considering the requirements of external funders, college capacity, and opportunities for growth.
  • Engage external stakeholders to develop a shared vision to enhance entrepreneurship and IP services that support the local area. Enhance opportunities as well as the college reputation through cultivating strategic relationships and maintaining close contact with community representatives and other educational institutions.
  • Identify trends and new opportunities for growth. Look for strategic potential of new initiatives that can influence and enhance academic excellence. Provide strategic leadership and develop proposals for initiatives that can enhance and/or foster new areas and potentially generate revenue.
  • Identify and provide leadership and collaboration in the integration of entrepreneurship and IP services into applied research and academic activities. Facilitate exceptional experiential learning and employment opportunities for students, and new or improved product, service, process, and talent acquisition for industry and community partners to assist local businesses to achieve higher levels of productivity while preparing students to become future entrepreneurs and innovators.
  • Lead and collaborate on college technology commercialization activities, identifying and responding to industry-driven technology transfer needs, ensuring the protection of intellectual property and identifying and supporting spin-off opportunities from college research and innovation activities.
  • Ensure the provision of appropriate student pathway management and one-on-one meetings to provide guidance, mentorship and coaching to student companies. Direct the mentorship and coaching services for DC student entrepreneurs, ensuring that the appropriate program and staffing is in place for each student, meet one-on-one with students, alumni, and clients of community partners to provide business coaching, partnership development support, introductions to funding partners, college program partners, and faculty support, connections to industry mentors, scale-up guidance, and career pathway advisory services.
Management:
  • Lead, guide and oversee all initiatives that are conceived and executed according to best practices, funder requirements, and college policies. Implement continuous improvement. Manage status reporting and tracking as required by the college, funders, and stakeholders. Ensure the development and monitoring of annual work plans.
  • Ensure the daily operations of the Entrepreneurship Centre, including general communications oversight and distribution approvals are conducted by the team. Maintain records for record management and funding purposes. Schedule staff to ensure appropriate levels of coverage for FastStart promotion, event attendance, pitch competitions, workshops and employee training sessions, and tours of the Entrepreneurship Centre for college leadership, strategic community partners, etc.
  • Ensure the deliverables for the IP program are met, including consultation and advisory services, participation in research scoping meetings, events, case studies, and student/team IP education. Review and submit the Annual Commercialization Plan to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities as prepared by the manager, IP mobilization.
Human Resources:
  • Build a high-performance team by mentoring and coaching team members with a sharp focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Direct and supervise their work. Identify risks and opportunities in collaborations to avoid conflict and advance ORSIE\xe2\x80\x99s interest. Problem solving challenges in different collaborations with stakeholders
Outreach and Collaboration:
  • Represent DC within the greater innovation ecosystems of Durham, the institutional network, the provincial network, and the national network, Collaborate with the ORSIE applied research team to identify and develop opportunities for tech-based student entrepreneurs to apply for, and receive applied research funding, and for IP clients to access research services.
QUALIFICATIONS: * Masters Degree in Business, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Law
  • 7 years of experience working directly in the start-up industry, with entrepreneurs, or in an administrative, managerial or creative capacity with a business start-up, or as a founding member of a start-or managing IP portfolios. Alternatively, five years of experience working in the areas of entrepreneurship and commercialization; knowledge of start-up company environment, as well as the creation and growth of start-up companies.
  • 9 years of experience in a managerial role, leading a team of 3-6 employees.
  • 3+ years of experience developing marketing/communications plans and providing strategic direction on high-impact, national and international marketing campaigns.
  • Experience working in post-secondary environments is an asset.
  • Strong project management skills with experience in managing multiple projects and maintaining accountability.
  • Strong planning, coordination and organizational skills.
  • Superior communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to prepare materials for various audiences.
  • Knowledge of applied research funding opportunities and funder criteria is an asset.
  • Knowledge/experience with: Microsoft Suite of Products, Social Media Platforms Mailchimp, Eventbrite, Canva, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Detailed knowledge of intellectual property, Canadian legislation, and regulatory requirements
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service skills, presentation skills, communication skills
  • Knowledge of various client coaching/advising methods
  • Understanding of intellectual property and commercialization issues to ensure proper management of college and/or student background and new IP
  • Drivers licence and access to a vehicle to enable attendance at events and meetings
  • Audio/visual production talent and graphic design experience an asset (for the FastStart Creative Suite & Studio)
  • Experience working with 3D printers, Raspberry pi and Ardunio technology as asset (for the FastStart FastTECH makerspace)
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in all matters related to students, staffing and programming.
