Position Overview:
Reporting into the Assistant Vice President, Data Governance (AVP) the Director, Data Stewardship Enablement is a critical role in ensuring the management, protection, and effective utilization of the organization's data and is responsible for advancing and operationalizing data stewardship across the enterprise. This role ensures data assets are governed, trusted, and effectively leveraged to support business value, regulatory compliance, and the organization's data strategy. The Director works closely with the Data and Records Governance team and stakeholders across business, technology, risk, and compliance functions to drive data stewardship initiatives and helps define data ownership, quality standards, and data lifecycle management processes.
Responsibilities:
Partner with the AVP in the review, maintenance, and ongoing enhancement of the Corporate Data and Records Governance Policy to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and organizational needs.
Lead and manage complex, cross-functional projects and change management processes to implement governance policies, frameworks, and tools across the organization.
Manage records/data issues for both new and ongoing efforts, escalating any data issues/requests to management for review and approval.
Serve as a data-driven change agent and advocate to influence and train the organization on governance practices, data literacy, and program compliance.
Perform independent reviews and assessments on the adequacy of relevant Business Unit Programs to ensure adherence to corporate standards.
Support the organization and various committees as a subject matter expert.
Act as a thought leader and advocate for data stewardship best practices.
Provide support to facilitate Data Governance Council meetings and minutes.
Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes relevant to data stewardship.
Identify and implement opportunities to enhance data stewardship capabilities, processes, and effectiveness.
Measure and report on the impact of data stewardship enablement initiatives, supporting continuous improvement.
Perform people management responsibilities; set performance objectives for direct reports, conduct performance reviews, train, coach, mentor, motivate, lead, and recruit new staff.
Oversee all aspects of resource management (selection, training and development, performance management, retention, recognition) and maintain current staff information such as current headcount, budgeted headcount, turnover, staff salaries, incentive/merit information and staff organizational charts so that service disruptions are minimized
Qualifications:
Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field (Master's degree or MBA preferred).
3-5 years of experience in data-related fields
PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent experience in project management is highly desirable
Data Governance certification is highly desirable
Specific Knowledge & Skills (not preferred or an asset)
Specific experience in Data Governance frameworks and practices
Maintaining Data Catalogs/Dictionaries and data lineage documentation
Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements, with desired skills in provincial and federal privacy legislation knowledge (PIPEDA, PIPA, Law25, etc.).
Proven experience in project and change management, including leading cross-functional teams to implement governance initiatives.
Experience in managing personnel in governance contexts, including education and training.
Strong communication and strategy development skills.
Familiarity with Data Governance principles and/or ARMA's Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles and other records and information management practices.
Understanding of Electronic Content Management Systems, Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, SharePoint, etc.), and shared drives.
Ability to be consultative and affect change through influence.
Proficiency in navigating data models, understanding data structures, and integrating data from various sources, such as ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and APIs.
Understanding of data security tools and practices, including data encryption and masking techniques to secure sensitive information.
