Job Description


**This posting is for one (1) full-time temporary position ending on or before September 20, 2025**Reporting to the Chief Innovation & Technology Officer, this position will lead the strategic planning, development, and implementation of AI technologies to enhance law enforcement operations, optimize resource allocation, and improve community safety outcomes. You will collaborate closely with departmental leaders, technology partners, and external stakeholders to drive innovation and leverage AI solutions effectively within the Service.Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with the mission, goals, and priorities of the Edmonton Police Service. Provide strategic guidance on the adoption, integration, and deployment of AI technologies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. Communicate & report to EPS leadership on projects and roadmaps.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts in the development, procurement, and implementation of AI initiatives. Manage a high performing team of experts in machine learning and AI tools
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies, tools, and platforms to assess their potential impact on policing operations. Conduct feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments to inform decision-making and investment priorities.
  • Working with the IT Planning & Delivery Branch, oversee the planning, execution, and monitoring of AI projects from conception to completion. Ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to quality standards. Mitigate risks and address issues as they arise throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the data governance policies, procedures, and best practices established within the Edmonton Police Service to ensure the ethical and responsible use of data in AI applications. Ensure compliance & contribute to relevant regulations, privacy laws, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external partners, and the academic community to identify opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. Foster partnerships with academia, industry, and government agencies to leverage resources and expertise in AI research and development.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to build AI expertise within the police service. Promote awareness and understanding of AI concepts, principles, and applications among staff members at all levels as the service strives to improve data literacy across all leadership.
  • Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to evaluate the impact of AI initiatives on policing outcomes. Monitor and analyze performance data to identify areas for improvement and optimize the effectiveness of AI solutions. Maintain strong budget and resource management across AI projects within the EPS and with external partners.
Qualifications
  • Degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressive experience in related roles and leadership roles overseeing AI projects or initiatives, preferably in a law enforcement or public safety context.
  • Recognized as an authority in management and/or area of specialization and provides advice, guidance and support to others across the organization.
  • Strong technical expertise in AI technologies, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans, manage multidisciplinary teams, and drive innovation in complex organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally along with the ability to explain the concepts of AI to a non-technical audience.
  • Deep understanding of ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI in policing, with a commitment to upholding the responsible AI principles and procedures within the Edmonton Police Service.
  • Experience working with diverse datasets, data governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements related to data privacy and security.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, tools, and techniques for planning, executing, and monitoring AI projects.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of artificial intelligence and law enforcement.
  • As part of your pre-hire screening, you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.
Hours of Work:
36.9 hours per week, Monday \xe2\x80\x93 Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of variable hours of work program.Salary Range:
95M, Salary Grade: ML4, $152,329.63 - $190,412.52 (annually).General:
