Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure track Digital Projects Librarian, Repositories and Publishing at the rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian.

This is a four-year, renewable tenure track appointment. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2023.

Nature of the Work:

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally, and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.

This is an incredibly exciting time as LCR invests in its technological infrastructure and seeks new and innovative ways to actualize the digital in the Taylor Family Digital Library. LCR is implementing a digital asset and digital preservation strategy to create sustainable user centric access to our digital content. Digitization of hidden collections is a priority. Innovative user centric approaches such as reserve books kiosks are in place. The use and application of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important.

Reporting to the Director, Digital Services, the Digital Projects Librarian proposes, guides, monitors and assesses a variety of digital library projects, with a particular focus on digital repositories (PRISM, PRISM Dataverse, and Digital Collections), supporting open journal publishing and digitization project management. The successful candidate will participate and shape all phases of the planning and development of digital library projects in these areas, including the development of business cases and project plans, organizing, and implementing workflows, coordinating project activities, communication planning and delivery, training, outreach, quality control, and assessment. The successful candidate will liaise and collaborate with Canadian and international communities of practice to enhance and improve repository and data services.

As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in teaching, service and scholarship is expected.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference, consultation, and instruction to support the use of repository and publishing tools
  • Scope and define digital projects, providing technical and creative expertise to design, develop, manage, implement, train, assess, and support digital projects
  • Oversee and support the Open Journal System service
  • Support digital projects from faculty and colleagues using digital repositories
  • Develops and maintains current knowledge of and trends in digital scholarship, information technology\'s impact on libraries and archives, and other areas related to this position
  • Apply knowledge to continuously improve and advance digital project skills
  • Support sustainable digital project and collection development by integrating digital preservation strategies in digital projects
  • Develops and maintains current knowledge of and trends in repositories, digital asset management, digital preservation, digital scholarship, and other areas related to this position
  • Apply knowledge to continuously improve and advance skills
Qualifications/Expertise Required:
  • Masters from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible professional experience related to Digital Projects in an academic research library.
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital scholarship trends and academic library requirements and priorities, including familiarity with digital scholarship environments and labs.
  • Familiarity with current trends and developments in digitization and in institutional and other repositories
  • Experience managing software implementation projects
  • Experience working with external software vendors
  • Experience working with in house development teams
  • Established record of successful project management
  • Strong service orientation
  • Thorough understanding and awareness of open access, repositories and research data management, data services, and digital library development
  • Interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluation of current practice
  • Superior leadership skills
  • Ability to operate within a complex work environment, working both independently and within a team setting
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision and direction
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience at the rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian.
