Gateway Association Overview

Join the Team That's Been Changing Lives Since 1975

What started as a bold vision by a group of determined parents has grown into one of Alberta's leading disability organizations supporting equity-seeking individuals and families. At Gateway Association, we're more than a nonprofit -- we're a community-focused force for change.

With deep roots and forward-thinking approaches, we support individuals with disabilities and their families to navigate systems, achieve goals, and thrive in welcoming, equitable communities and workplaces. We do this through three powerful pillars: our Family Resource Centre, Employment Resource Centers, as well as strategic education and capacity-building initiatives.

As a nimble and responsive organization, we actively pursue meaningful partnerships and community collaborations to drive the systemic change that true disability justice requires. Gateway is where meaningful transformation begins -- building relationships, strengthening communities, and creating spaces of belonging by turning advocacy into action and values into impact.

Role Overview

The Edmonton Employment Resource Centre (EERC) applies integrity and subject matter expertise to talent-matching and employment retention services to support engaged, inclusive workplaces. We assist job-seekers to overcome barriers and occupy meaningful employment roles while building employer capacity for diversity and inclusion.

Digital skills and technology enabled workflows have become essential across Edmonton's labour market, creating new opportunities but also significant barriers for jobseekers with disabilities. To address these gaps and prepare participants for an increasingly digital future of work, Gateway Association has created a role dedicated to leading the development and delivery of Work Based Learning (WBL) and Work Simulation (WS) opportunities that build foundational, transferable skills and support career exploration across multiple entry level sectors.

This position is responsible for designing, expanding, and facilitating WBL and WS curriculum, ensuring activities reflect real workplace expectations, inclusive practices, and Alberta's labour market needs. The role also develops introductory digital literacy content, including an AI readiness workshop, to ensure participants have the baseline digital comfort required to successfully engage in WBL and WS.

A strong emphasis is placed on accessible curriculum design, universal design for learning, trauma informed practice, and embedding digital skill building into all simulation and experiential learning activities. The position also collaborates closely with Service Navigators, Career and Inclusion Consultants, and Employer partners to align content with participant goals and workforce expectations.

This role is central to preparing participants to develop transferable skills, explore career pathways, and engage confidently in Work Based Learning and Work Simulation as stepping stones toward employment.

Direct Duties

Digital Literacy Workshops and Curriculum Delivery

Design, update, and maintain introductory digital literacy curriculum that prepares participants for engagement in Work Based Learning and Work Simulation. Develop a basic AI use workshop for staff to deliver, focusing on safe and ethical use, digital risks, and the growing role of AI in modern workplaces to build Participant readiness. Create accessible, plain language learning materials that reflect universal design for learning and support diverse disability related needs. Develop facilitator guides, lesson structures, and supporting materials to ensure consistent delivery across the team. Train team members to facilitate these introductory workshops, ensuring fidelity to the curriculum and alignment with Workforce Development learning goals.

Inclusion and Accessibility Strategies

Apply equitable digital inclusion strategies to engage participants with the highest digital barriers and support their transition into WBL or WS activities. Work collaboratively with Service Navigators and Career and Inclusion Consultants to integrate digital readiness or accessibility needs into Participant Action Plans and Life Stability goals. Support participants in accessing and understanding basic accommodations, adaptive tools, or accessibility features needed for course participation, including coordination of ASL interpretation as required. Embed accessibility considerations into all curriculum updates, workshop content, and simulation materials.

Work Based Learning and Work Simulation

Take the lead on designing, developing, and delivering WBL and WS opportunities, ensuring activities build relevant, transferable skills that apply across multiple industries and support participants in gaining career direction within aligned sectors. Build on and expand existing Work Simulation curriculum by identifying skill gaps, strengthening task progression, updating exercises, and ensuring alignment with labour market expectations. Deliver Work Simulations primarily in an online format, with some in person components where appropriate to meet learning goals, accessibility needs, or Employer informed expectations. Draft new curriculum elements for WBL and WS activities that reinforce essential workplace behaviours, digital comfort, communication, and teamwork. Embed opportunities for Participants to strengthen digital skills as a core outcome, recognizing that the future of work across all sectors is increasingly digital and requires comfort with technology enabled workflows. Ensure all curriculum materials support participants with varied learning styles and disability related needs through accessible design.

Employer Involvement and Co Design

Support the Employer Services team by incorporating employer provided input on entry level skill needs, workplace technology, and role expectations into curriculum updates for WBL and WS. Collaborate with Employers, when appropriate, to refine non proprietary elements of WBL and WS activities based on real world practices and inclusive onboarding approaches.

Administration and Quality Assurance

Maintain accurate tracking, documentation, and participant progress records for Compass and reporting requirements. Support the Team Lead in meeting Workforce Development targets tied to participation and successful engagement in WBL and WS activities. Continually refine and update workshop, WBL, and WS curriculum materials based on participant feedback, accessibility needs, employer insight, and evolving labour market trends, ensuring content remains introductory, transferable, and relevant.

The Commitment

Full-time permanent position working 37.5 hours/week. We believe in work life balance and are committed to keeping the workload in alignment with the true hours worked.

At Gateway Association, we strive for roles to be permanent and continuous. However, as a registered charity supported by government funding, private foundations, grants, individual donors, and fundraising efforts, some funding is term-based with variable contract lengths.
