Position Summary:



The

Diet Assistant

plays an integral role in supporting patient nutrition services. Responsibilities include editing, delivering, and retrieving patient menus while monitoring for completeness and appropriateness of selections. The Diet Assistant may assist patients with completing menu choices, ensuring alignment with therapeutic dietary needs.

Additional responsibilities include tallying daily menus, preparing production counts, coding invoices, inventory tracking, receiving food orders, handling cafeteria cash, Meals on Wheels ordering and reporting, and preparing monthly departmental documentation.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Demonstrate:



Computer Proficiency

: Strong skills in Microsoft Word and Excel are essential for accurate word processing, spreadsheets, charts, and tables. The ability to quickly learn and adapt to new computer programs is also important.

Knowledge of Food Services

: Understanding of hospital food service operations, including therapeutic diets, food production, and service processes.

Patient Interaction

: Professional, respectful support in assisting patients with menu completion; responsible for the timely and accurate delivery and retrieval of menus.

Organizational Skills

: Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt to shifting priorities and frequent interruptions.

Attention to Detail

: Critical for completing departmental statistics, conducting inventory, verifying prices, resolving discrepancies, processing invoices, and compiling month-end reports (including Meals on Wheels, inventory counts, and cash verification).

Communication Skills

: Clear and effective verbal communication in English with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

Literacy Skills

: Proficient in English reading and writing, with the ability to maintain records, draft professional correspondence, interpret patient dietary information, and accurately transcribe messages.

Office Administration

: Working knowledge of standard office practices, including record-keeping and filing systems.

Interpersonal Skills

: Collaborative and respectful attitude toward patients, families, staff, and the public.

Initiative & Independence

: Able to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of accuracy and accountability.

Qualifications:



Completion of a

Medical Office Administration Diploma

from a recognized college is

required

Safe Food Handlers Certification

is an asset

Experience:



Minimum of

three months' experience

in an office or clerical setting

Proficiency in Microsoft Office

, specifically Word and Excel Experience in a

food service environment

is preferred Familiarity with

therapeutic diets

is considered an asset Previous experience communicating with staff and patients is preferred
