Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager Diagnostic Imaging Child Health or designate, the incumbent: * Performs a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision. The type and extent of the procedure varies depending on the client\'s history and or direction from the supervising physician. These could include eye, thyroid, breast, testicles, vascular, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, extremities and cranial studies.

  • Supervises students, in conjunction with the Clinical Instructor, and assists in research and teaching projects.
Experience
  • Previous related experience preferred.
  • Experience in pediatrics preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Graduate of an accredited/recognized program in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Upon hire, must be eligible for registration with Sonography Canada, CRGS (Canadian Registered General Sonographer) credential and must become a registered member within three months of hire. The Centre will consider certification with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S.) with the following specialties: Neurosonography and Abdominal Sonography.
  • The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and providing proof of active registration with either Sonography Canada or both registries.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with Shared Health policy.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Position requires a high degree of technical expertise and a thorough knowledge of all specialized areas in pediatric diagnostic ultrasound in order to perform a wide range of ultrasound procedures requiring independent judgment and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with various levels of personnel, both internally and externally, and within an inter-disciplinary environment.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and relate well with patients and their families.
  • Must have the ability to adapt readily, and respond with initiative, to a changing environment.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Must be able to function as an independent, self directed professional.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical analysis skills.
  • Must have the ability to use professional judgment to adapt and apply procedures, protocols and professional standards of care to new and changing technology and needs of others.
  • Must have knowledge of the emotional and psychosocial needs of children in hospitals and apply this knowledge toward alleviating the trauma of undergoing diagnostic imaging procedures for both the patient and family.
  • Must be able to promote a pediatric patient oriented and personalized environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion to all patients/family/support persons, and recognize and calm those with high degree of anxiety.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be in good physical and mental health and be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time without resting.
  • Must demonstrate the use of safe and effective body mechanics while working with clients.
  • Must be able to safely lift and transfer clients, including large and/or heavy clients who may have limited or no weight bearing capabilities.
  • May be required to occasionally work extended hours.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, noise, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/families/staff.
