Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to serve as a skilled Data Management Specialist with expertise in GIS, mapping systems, and field data collection tools, playing a vital role in managing, analyzing, and visualizing environmental data. This role requires maintaining effective communication and collaboration across all teams to facilitate information sharing, training, and consulting. As the primary contact for geospatial projects, the Intermediate Data Management Specialist provides subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders, offering technical support for information, knowledge, and tool development, modification, and administration of databases for the storage, and retrieval of data. Additionally, the position involves supporting project needs for field data collection, with the goal of enhancing data insights, analysis and predictive capabilities.
Responsibilities and activities:
Develop, maintain, and optimize GIS databases and mapping systems for environmental projects.
Design and implement field data collection strategies using various tools (Survey 123, Fieldmaps) and devices to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
Assist and participate in spatial analysis, create information products (maps, graphs, and data) using GIS and related software and subsystems
Integrate and analyze spatial and non-spatial data to support environmental monitoring and assessment.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to interpret data and develop geo-spatial visualizations and reports.
Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Create and implement standards for quality control of geographic data
Stay updated with emerging technologies in GIS, AI, and machine learning to improve data processing workflows.
Assist in the development of AI and machine learning models for environmental data analysis and predictive modeling.
Designs, prepares and coordinates logical data models, definition structures, standards, procedures and documentation for the GIS and related/integrated systems or software applications
Support the development of SharePoint workflows to improve internal data management, reporting, and business processes.
Develop dashboards and reports to visualize geospatial and environmental data for internal teams and clients.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's or master's degree in environmental sciences, Computer Science, Geography, Geomatics Engineering, Geographic Information Systems or related field
Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience in database management, geospatial analysis, cartographic mapping, web-based GIS, and remote sensing application, e.g., ArcGIS, AutoCAD, R, Google Earth Engine, FME, QGIS, GRASS, ERDAS Imagine, eCognition and/or other GIS/remote sensing software
Experience with field data collection tools (Survey 123, Fieldmaps, GPS devices).
Knowledge, Skills and abilities:
Readily adapt to changing priorities and effectively work in a changing and high-volume work environment.
Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Strong understanding of data management best practices, including data quality and security.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 programs and tools
Must speak, read and write English fluently
Assets:
Proven experience managing large spatial and attribute datasets.
Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R for spatial data analysis.
Familiarity with machine learning, AI, and predictive analytics.
Experience with the use of multispectral, hyperspectral, and LiDAR data for environmental applications
Experience developing SharePoint-based automations or workflows to streamline business processes.
Power BI skills, including DAX, Power Query, and custom visual development.
Working Conditions:
Hybrid office-based (100%), with minimum 3 days a week in the Edmonton Office.
