The Role:

Rakuten Kobo Inc. is seeking a Data Scientist to join our Big Data team. Reporting to the Manager of Data Science & Analytics, you will bring your background and expertise of applying statistical modelling techniques in the context of e-commerce to assist Kobo with evaluating and improving our many consumer facing services & products. Responsibilities include proposing specific approaches, techniques, and models to deploy against both very directed and very ambiguous questions from our business stakeholders, hands on coding & data wrangling, working with technical teams to build and improve data pipelines, and presenting findings, outcomes, or next steps to stakeholders.

In this role, you will have an opportunity to flex your ability to turn a large volume of structured and unstructured data into a story of performance that will allow Kobo to further succeed in its mission of making reading lives better. You will also be called upon to help design tests & approaches that lead to measurable outcomes. You will have access to our data stack and analytic platform, regular communication from decision makers, and support from our engineering & data teams.

The Skillset:

Must Haves

• Formal education in an analytic field of study or equivalent industry experience.
• 2+ years experience with advanced SQL (Joins, CTEs, Windowing, ...)
• 2+ years experience with data manipulation ecosystems (R, Python/Pandas, ...)
• Experience with data preprocessing and validation.
• Experience writing maintainable, self-documenting code (revision control, appropriate use of modules/functions, ...)
• Hands on experience developing predictive models (decision trees, logistic regression, clustering, ...)
• An understanding of the machine learning lifecycle and suitable domains for its use.

Bonus

• Hands on experience sharing self-serve data using tools like Tableau, Domo ...
• Hands on experience developing & deploying data pipelines.
• Knowledge of data engineering best practices.
• Familiarity with the ebook, audiobook, or publishing industry.
• Knowledge of data governance: legal requirements and best practices (GDPR, CCPA, ...)
