Job Description

As a Data Science Intern with People Corporation, you will support the Data Services division in building and leveraging data-driven solutions that deliver measurable business impact. You will work on data analysis, model development, and data integration efforts that help maximize the value of our data assets to support business growth.



This internship offers hands-on experience collaborating with experienced professionals across data engineering, data operations, data architecture, business intelligence, and data governance teams. You will gain exposure to enterprise-level data services and learn how analytics and machine learning drive real-world decision-making.

The Data Science Intern will:

Support the implementation of data services that align with business objectives Validate data accuracy and consistency under the supervision of senior analysts Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify patterns, anomalies, and cost trends Support senior data scientists in building and testing predictive models (e.g., claims cost forecasting, fraud detection) Summarize findings in charts, tables, and visualizations Basic feature engineering and data transformations for model inputs Analyze member demographics and usage patterns to identify segments that drive claim costs Evaluate the impact of wellness programs on claims experience Build and update dashboards and reports showing key claims KPIs (e.g., average claim cost, utilization rates, high-cost claimants) Automate simple reporting tasks using Excel, Power BI, or Python visualization libraries Collaborate with data engineering, actuarial/underwriting, and claims operations teams to understand data flows and business rules Participate in team meetings to learn how data insights support plan design, pricing, and cost management Document data sources, analysis processes, and model results in clear, concise formats Research emerging analytics techniques in health claims data analysis and present key learnings to the team

To be successful as a Data Science Intern at People Corporation, you will need:

Core Technical Skills

Programming Languages: Knowledge of Python or R for data analysis Data Querying: Familiarity with SQL for extracting and manipulating data Data Visualization: Experience with visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Python libraries Statistics & Mathematics: Understanding of statistical methods (mean, variance, regression, hypothesis testing) Excel Proficiency: Ability to use pivot tables, charts, and data cleaning functions


Analytical & Business Skills

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA): Ability to identify patterns, anomalies, and trends in health claims data Predictive Modeling: Exposure to machine learning concepts (regression, classification) Domain Awareness: Interest in healthcare/insurance claims, provider networks, and cost drivers Problem Solving: Logical thinking to interpret data and deliver actionable insights


Soft Skills

Attention to Detail: Ensuring data quality and accuracy in analyses Communication: Ability to present findings in a simple and clear manner to non-technical audiences Collaboration: Comfort working in cross-functional teams (actuarial, data services, IT, finance) Curiosity & Learning Mindset: Willingness to research new data science techniques and healthcare analytics trends


Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

Exposure to big data tools (e.g., Databricks, Spark, or AWS/Azure/GCP environments) Experience with version control tools like Git/GitHub Basic understanding of data governance and privacy requirements in healthcare (PHIPA, PIPEDA)

Preferred Experience

Currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) a degree program in Actuarial program, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or another quantitative discipline Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset Eagerness to learn new technologies and techniques Good written and verbal communication skills Ability to work in a team environment and follow guidance Attention to detail, especially when handling sensitive health data
