About the role: HSBC Data & Architecture Office (DAO) promotes a data-driven culture across HSBC through our strategy of:

  • Protect: To protect our data we need robust policies for data management and enhanced governance e.g. data that is consumed from a trusted source, meets quality standards, and complies with regulatory obligations.
  • Connect: Move to a data-led culture through enhanced training including on the job opportunities. Our talent is the glue between protecting our data and unlocking value for our customers.
  • Unlock. Value is unlocked when we deliver on the opportunities our well-managed data presents e.g. improving customer / colleague experience, increasing revenue, commercialising our data, optimising capital, enhancing risk management or reducing costs.

We are currently seeking an individual to join the DAO team in the role of Data Manager, supporting all three pillars in the strategy above. The role focuses on the execution of cross business/function improvements in data governance and data quality management to support data strategy and initiatives, data quality assurance, and data risk management and controls
Responsibilities:
  • Supporting Canada Head of DAO to implement strategic and tactical data management initiatives based on bank-wide data governance vision;
  • Managing and supporting the implementation of HSBC data governance and quality guidelines, procedures and methods
  • Managing and supporting the implementation of data privacy and business architecture standards
  • Managing and supporting good practice in the management of data tools, standards, frameworks and templates
  • Managing and supporting the management and monitoring of operational risk in the field of data management
  • Managing and supporting oversight of the whole data lifecycle, from record creation to disposal (Information Lifecycle Management)
  • Working with the business community and the data community to help execute on data projects;
  • Providing subject matter expert guidance in data quality and data management across different areas;

On a day-to-day basis the role holder will work with a diverse range of stakeholders and project teams, providing guidance and advice on data management policy, and helping them to implement the required data controls.
Major Challenges
  • Ambiguity – the role requires navigating data management implementation approaches and policies that are yet to be fully defined and established in Canada
  • Flexibility and adaptability – regularly changing priorities and tasks that unpredictable and wide-ranging, complex and time-sensitive requiring the simultaneous handling of a broad range of issues
  • Operating, influencing, and communicating effectively with all stakeholders and other colleagues both inside and outside the various functions

Management of Risk
  • The role holder will ensure the fair treatment of our customers is at the heart of everything we do, both personally and as an organization. This will be achieved by consistently displaying the behaviors outlined in the group’s core values

Observation of Internal Controls
  • Maintain HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators
  • Fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with regulators
  • The role holder will be responsible for ensuring they and the teams in the various functions adhere to HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of external audit points together with any issues raised by external auditors

Requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of Data Management Framework – data governance, data privacy, business architecture and data quality.
  • Understanding of Data Controls – data usage, data movement, data storage
  • Experience of working on Data/Information Management projects of varying complexities.
  • Strong analytical skills with business analysis aptitude
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop and effectively communicate complex concepts and ideas
  • Ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally, and to interact with all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Balanced approach to risk management including techniques to mitigate risk

Desirable
  • Project Management skills (project planning and tracking; Issue identification and management; project status reporting)
  • Working experience in an agile environment, JIRA/Confluence would be beneficial
