The Data Governance Specialist works as part of the Enterprise Data Governance Team to support the implementation of new data governance tools and related processes, with a focus on enterprise data cataloging, metadata management, business workflows and data quality management.

This role will work closely with the Business teams and other Data & Technology partners to ensure data governance standards, policies and best practices are understood and applied consistently across the organization. The ideal candidate for this role will have a deep understanding of data governance principles, financial regulations, and the technical skills necessary to excel in this position. This position offers an opportunity to influence and shape the OMERS data governance practices to drive business success and ensure data integrity.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand OMERS business functions, activities, and transactions, as well as standard information and data governance best practices to contribute practical solutions for both structured and unstructured data in the development and implementation of the Data Governance Program
  • Design, develop and monitor technology solutions around key data governance focus areas of data catalog, metadata management, data quality management, data lineage business workflows and access management
  • Partner with Enterprise Data Governance Managers and Data Stewards to define and instrument metadata capture and storage for the CDE\xe2\x80\x99s, evolve our enterprise business glossary, and facilitate the linkage between business definitions and the underlying technical metadata
  • Maintain and manage the processes around metadata repositories (data dictionary, business glossary) including data definitions, data dictionaries, data classification (identification of sensitive data) and data cataloging, to provide context and understanding of data assets.
  • Perform data profiling, data quality analysis and the development of data quality rules to support monitoring and remediation activities
  • Refine and implement the enterprise metadata management framework, inclusive of business, operational and technical metadata
  • Provide ongoing access, maintenance, usage, and technical support for our Data Governance Tool inventory including Collibra, Azure Purview
  • Contribute to the development of reporting requirements to monitor data compliance as well as KPIs and metrics to gauge the health and maturity of data governance program
  • Collaborate with business and D&T partners to find opportunities to improve data accuracy and ensure that data owners are accountable for remediation
  • Contribute to the development of appropriate materials, conducting training sessions and be the change advocates to drive data governance best practices
  • Provide inputs on the design and development of data models for data warehousing and cataloging projects
  • Work closely with Data & Technology team during the development of new information and data governance related applications, including requirements validation and testing
  • Primary point of contact for business partners to resolve data security & access issues
  • Educate employees and stakeholders on data governance practices and their importance in maintaining data quality and compliance
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in engineering, math or a field related to information, data management, analytics or financial services.
  • 5+ years of technical experience in implementing data governance, data analytics or data quality tools
  • Hands on experience with tools such as Collibra, Informatica IICS, Microsoft Purview or similar ias a must for this role
  • Knowledge and expertise in data governance technology, business process modeling, metadata, data lineage, data classification, data quality and enterprise implementation of data governance tools and solutions
  • Experience in defining and building enterprise data management policies, processes, solutions, and associated documentation to strengthen data management
  • Experience with SQL, database applications MS SQL/ Oracle, and visualization tools such as Power BI and Tableau
  • Understanding of Cloud, Big Data technologies, architectural concepts - data lake, data warehouse, relational databases, data ingestion, ETL etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of data regulations, privacy, ethical use, data sharing, critical data indicators, access management and data masking techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication to effectively articulate and communicate with both business and technical development teams
  • Experience in project management and the ability to lead data governance initiatives.
  • A team player with a good understanding of the Agile methodology and Change management
