Job Description


We are looking for a Senior Data Governance Specialist for a 12-month contract position, with possible extensions, in Calgary, Alberta. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Hybrid schedule, at least 4 days in the office. 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. It is NOT a remote role.

Role Description:
The successful candidate will play a crucial role with our business by establishing data processes to a defined modern standard, eliminating redundant costs and complexity, and increasing the quality and value of our data assets. The scope of this role encompasses all aspects of the data lifecycle, including people, process, data, and technology. The program mandate has strong executive and senior leadership support. The contract Data Governance Specialist will work with Program team members, Corporate Data Office, and IT to develop a data governance framework, roll out through business initiatives, and support sustain formalized data governance across the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject matter expertise and support the delivery of required foundational data governance standards, processes and practices.
  • Support the formalization of data ownership and governance across the full breadth of company\'s business.
  • Implement necessary data governance policies, procedures, and controls within the Data Office and business functions to ensure data integrity, compliance, and accessibility across the organization.
  • Analyze and assess existing data governance processes and technologies to identify areas for improvement and develop recommendations and action plans for changes that provide direct business value.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements, identify gaps, and develop strategies for data integration, optimization, and modernization.
  • Work with business functions to define and document data related requirements, standards, and processes to drive cross-functional awareness and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct gap analyses to determine initiatives and build out roadmaps to address data governance and data management opportunities.
  • Facilitates clear and efficient communication between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring the delivery of value without utilizing complex technical language.
  • Assist in the development of data management and data governance training materials and provide guidance to team members and stakeholders on best practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data management to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of data innovation.
Experience and Skills:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in data analysis, data governance, data management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years Oil & Gas experience.
  • Strong knowledge of data management principles, including data integration, data quality, data governance, master data management, and data architecture.
  • Experience with data cleansing & migration, modernization, and optimization projects.
  • Experience with Master Data Management, Data Quality, and Data Catalog tools.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to data management and governance.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, with a strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality results.
  • Prior experience with large ERP/SAP migrations, Asset management, HRIS/Workday, ETRM/Allegro is a plus.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools, programming languages and development processes such as CICD is a plus.
  • Experience with (or governing) data solutions that leverage large language models other advanced analytics implementations is a plus.
  • Experience with data visualization and reporting tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, or Spotfire is a plus.
