Job Summary
The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research and knowledge mobilization centre that brings together expertise, from across disciplines and sectors, to contribute to improving conditions that promote an equitable start in life for all children and their families. The incumbent position will be responsible for cleaning datasets, developing codebooks, conducting statistical analyses, and preparing results for dissemination in presentations, reports, formal research and evaluation reports, and peer-reviewed publications for HELP.

Organizational Status
The Data Analyst will report directly to the Data Management & Analysis Manager and will work closely with the Core Projects Director and the Data Management, Reporting and E-system, and Implementation teams.

Work Performed

  • reliability and usability/data integrity.
  • Performs statistical analyses of data requests by HELP, as needed.
  • Coordinates and organizes data collections by managing the mechanical process of putting data together to meet data requests. This will include:
  • ensuring data integrity and quality
  • keeping current data codebooks
  • trouble-shooting data quality problems
  • recommending methods to improve efficiency of data collection processes
  • responding to requests for use of this data
  • Codes Indigenous data requests and prepares this data for reports to Aboriginal Steering Committee
  • Responsible for ensuring that the security and confidentiality of all data is maintained.
  • Assists in developing code books, syntax, and data dictionaries that guide use of variables.
  • Responsibility (shared with the Data Management Team) to ensure that HELP Unit activities comply with the Information Sharing Agreements and meet the standard requirements for an annual privacy audit.
  • Collaborates with the HELP\xe2\x80\x99s Implementation team.
  • Other duties as may be required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Exercises judgement and makes decisions in the area of data coordination and analysis. Responsible for the integrity of the data. Unreliable data, and incorrect analysis of research results, can result in implications for current and future funding from the BC Ministries, and loss of reputation of the HELP Directors and to HELP. Lack of compliance with terms of grants will also lead to confusion, loss of opportunities and a poor impression of HELP and the University.

Responsible for ensuring that the security and confidentiality of all data is maintained. Failure in this respect could jeopardize not only a specific project but much of the research work of HELP, and others in the research community.

Supervision Received
Works under general direction of the Data Management & Analysis Manager and works closely with other members of the Data Management Team. Makes decisions and conducts analysis within established guidelines.

Supervision Given
Works cooperatively with other employees. May give technical guidance to support staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Applied statistical analytical experience - preferably working with large or complex datasets. Familiarity with population health, health, or child development topics and a post-graduate degree in Data Science an asset. Familiarity with linkable and administrative databases an asset.

Strong preference will be given to candidates of Indigenous ancestry.

Skills
  • Knowledge of quantitative research methodology to include the applied use of multiple and logistic regression analyses.
  • Knowledge of qualitative research methodologies an asset.
  • Ability to use the following computer software applications at an intermediate level:
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • SPSS and/or R.
  • Familiarity with other statistical database packages, Postgres and Python an asset.
  • Knowledge of early child development, including early learning and child care an asset.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to present detailed information to non-technical audiences is also an asset.
