A Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) acts as a crucial safety agent in construction and infrastructure projects by locating private underground utilities and identifying embedded objects within concrete structures. They utilize specialized equipment-- including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Industrial Radiography (X-Ray), and conventional electromagnetic pipe and cable locating equipment, to primarily prevent harmful contact with unknown/ undocumented utility infrastructure. In addition, the DPT will be required to provide drilling services through concrete floors, walls and other concrete structures supporting electrical/ mechanical industries and other applications as required. Typical working hours between 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday throughout the GTA with some overtime/ after hours and weekend work available.
Job Responsibilities
Concrete Scanning (GPR):
Scan concrete slabs, walls, and decks to identify the precise location of embedded items like rebar, post-tension cables, conduits, and voids before cutting, coring, or drilling. In addition to damage prevention, mapping and imaging of embedded objects for pre-design/ engineering applications.
Utility Locating:
Conduct private utility locating services to mark sub-surface features indicative of underground infrastructure/ utilities (electrical, water, gas, telecommunications, UST's, voids, unusual soil conditions) using both conventional EM equipment, and Ground Penetrating Radar.
Data Analysis & Mapping:
Process and interpret GPR data to create 2D or 3D images of subsurface conditions.
Reporting:
Prepare detailed, technical reports, photos, and sketches of findings for clients.
Site Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all work adheres to Canadian Cutting and Coring and OHSA safety policies, while additionally utilizing industry best practices and standards.
Client Communication:
Clearly communicate with contractors and project managers regarding survey results and potential risks and hazards.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Experience:
Previous experience with GPR, utility locating, or working on construction sites is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in using GPR technology, electromagnetic locators, and associated software for reporting.
Certification:
GPR Manufacturing Training Certification, DPT Certification, NULCA/ LMI Competency, CSDA GPR Basics, or equivalent an asset.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift 50lbs minimum, and stand for extended periods.
Driver's License:
A clean driver's abstract and valid license required.
Working Conditions
Environment:
Predominantly indoor with some exterior work required on construction or industrial sites.
Travel:
Daily travel within a specific region is common.
Autonomy:
Often involves working independently with minimal supervision.
Schedule:
Full-time hours with potential for overtime during peak construction seasons.
