Reporting to the Manager of Community Recreation & Events, the Curator of the Bell Homestead National Historic Site in Brantford, ON is committed to the preservation of historical resources, guest service excellence and is a valuable member of an innovative results-oriented recreation team. This position is responsible for the operation, guest service experience, and delivery of programs and services at the site. Fostering a positive work environment through effective leadership, the Curator will provide staff with mentorship, support, and performance management while maintaining positive relationships with team members, volunteers, patrons, and internal and external stakeholders.

DUTIES:



Artefacts Collection, Buildings and Grounds Maintenance and Preservation



Oversee the complete management of artefact collections for the Bell Homestead NHS, comprised of over 900 historical objects Oversee and undertake all building maintenance requirements for three historic buildings and three contemporary, ensuring all are safe and aesthetically attractive, and that the historic integrity of the historic buildings has not been compromised Generate maintenance work orders Coordinate with facilities team with fire inspections and facility maintenance
Perform and record monthly facility inspections

Coordinate with Parks Maintenance, Facilities, Horticulture and Forestry teams with grounds and amenities maintenance. Be on-call for all after-hours emergencies

Programs and Services



Develop and deliver all museum exhibits, displays, programming, special events, and visitor services, ensuring that they reflect the scope of interpretation detailed in the museum Mission Statements and follow the terms of the established Bell Homestead NHS Museum Operations Policy Leads team to develop and guide key themes, historically accurate messaging represented in all activities Facilitate and supervise community rental bookings and programming for efficient and optimal facility usage Complete all required administrative tasks and duties required with programming, staffing, and facility usage. Work collaboratively and nurture relationships with community organizations, internal and external stakeholders to provide education and recreation services within area of responsibility, that benefit the community and enhance the connection between Brantford and the celebrated invention of the telephone Plan, organize, and administer all marketing and communication activities for the museums including advertising, traveling exhibits, interpretation signs, brochures, media releases, articles, schedules of events, invitation, and website content Coordinate with the Tourism Department and the Communications Department on advertising and promotions related to site programs and services Track and evaluate Key Performance Indicators and coordinate needs assessments and public input as required

Administrative and Financial



Oversee the day-to-day operation of the museums including management of operating and capital budgets, staff/volunteer selection, training, and supervision, and management of museum store and cafe Assist with development and monitoring operating budgets Work collaboratively to analyze, review, prepare and revise rates and fees as directed Collaborate with internal stakeholders on relevant capital projects Complete all financial administrative tasks associated with the facility and program functions Report on the museum operation, undertake strategic planning and provide administrative assistance to the museum advisory committee, community outreach committee and membership Collaborate and support the efforts of stakeholder s including community groups/organizations, corporate sponsors, and Bell descendants. Responsible for the care, maintenance, tracking, purchase and payment of all supplies and equipment requirements Research, prepare and report on grants/ funding opportunities related to the operation of the museum including staffing, artefact conservation and programming. Work collaboratively on policy and standard operating procedures development and review as directed/required Prepare, complete and approve time entry and status reports

Supervisory and Customer Service



Prepare and review staff requisitions for staff recruitment Provide exceptional customer service and respond to customer inquiries Provide functional supervision of on-site maintenance duties and custodial staff Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS



Completion of a minimum three-year related university undergraduate degree program plus a post-graduate program in Museum Studies. Four years of previous related experience in a museum setting is required to gain the skills necessary to competently perform the duties of the position along with practical, hands-on experience performing curatorial and administrative duties. Knowledge of museum management, education, recreation and leisure program development, program evaluation, administrative and financial duties, and facility operations/maintenance is required. Superior staff supervisory and customer service skills are necessary. Proficient working knowledge of computer programs and software including but not limited to PastPerfect 5.0, JD Edwards and ActiveNet is required, plus the ability and skills to perform the duties as outlined herein within a reasonable time.

WAGE/SALARY RANGE:

$43.21 to $54.01 per hour (based on a 35-hour work week) plus benefits
