We are seeking an enthusiastic and culturally responsive teacher to lead programming in
Culture, Outdoor Education, and Foods
. The successful candidate will design and deliver engaging, experiential learning opportunities that connect students to
Nuu-chah-nulth
culture, traditional and contemporary food practices, and the local environment.
This position includes collaborating with community members to ensure authentic integration of cultural knowledge, promoting outdoor and land-based education, and supporting student wellness through practical, hands-on learning.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and teach courses in
Foods Studies, Outdoor Education, and Cultural Studies
, aligned with BC Curriculum and local priorities.
Incorporate
Nuu-chah-nulth values, traditions, and language
in daily learning experiences.
Collaborate with
Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members
to develop culturally relevant lessons and projects.
Organize and supervise
outdoor and land-based learning
such as seasonal harvesting, traditional food preparation, preserving foods, and environmental stewardship.
Foster a
safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment
that reflects Indigenous perspectives and student diversity.
Contribute to school-wide initiatives that promote
language and culture revitalization
.
Participate in
staff meetings, professional development, and community events
as part of a collaborative school team.
Qualifications and Requirements:
BC Teaching Certificate
(or eligibility for certification).
Strong understanding of
Indigenous education, decolonizing practices, and experiential learning approaches
.
Demonstrated experience or coursework in
Foods Studies, Outdoor Education, or Indigenous Education
.
Willingness to engage respectfully with
Nuu-chah-nulth community members and cultural protocols
.
Ability to work collaboratively and adaptively in a small, close-knit school environment.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn about
Nuu-chah-nulth language and traditions
.
Assets (Preferred):
Current
First Aid and Foodsafe certifications
(or willingness to obtain).
Experience teaching in a
remote or Indigenous community
.
Familiarity with
land-based education
and
project-based learning
.
Skills or background in
traditional food preparation, fishing, foraging, or environmental education
.
Commitment to building positive relationships with
students, families, and community partners
.
