Compensation: Annual Salary of $60,000 - $64,000 plus generous paid time off, group benefits, and HOOPP pension

Terms: Full-time 1.0 FTE, permanent

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours/Week

Start Date: Fall 2025

Location: 360 George Street N., Peterborough. Combination of office-based work and field/community engagement

Position overview:



The Cultural Wellness Coordinator plays a vital role in promoting health equity, cultural safety, and wellness initiatives for Indigenous communities. This position works in respectful partnership with Indigenous individuals, families, and communities to advance wellness, cultural safety, and equitable access to healthcare and services. Guided by Indigenous knowledge systems, community priorities, and the principles of self-determination, this role supports the co-creation of initiatives that celebrate strengths, address systemic barriers, and foster wholistic well-being.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES



Health Equity & Advocacy:



Work alongside Indigenous partners to identify community-defined wellness goals and priorities. Advocate for culturally safe, trauma-informed and equitable healthcare services. Support the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems, traditional healing, and landbased practices into wellness programs and initiatives.

Program Development & Coordination:



Collaborate with communities to co-design, implement, and evaluate culturally relevant health and wellness programs. Support and coordinate community-led workshops, health promotion activities, and cultural events that honour Indigenous traditional knowledge. Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to ensure programs are culturally relevant.

Community Engagement:



Build strong relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and service providers that are rooted in trust, reciprocity, and mutual respect. Facilitate community consultations and incorporate feedback into wellness programming. Serve as a liaison between the organization and Indigenous communities to enhance communication and strengthen partnerships.

Training & Education:



Co-develop and deliver cultural safety, humility, and anti-racism training in partnership with Indigenous educators and Knowledge Keepers. Develop educational materials that promote Indigenous knowledge and wisdom of health and wellness.

Research & Reporting:



Collect and analyze data to measure program effectiveness and community health outcomes, moving towards alignment with OCAP Principles. Measure program outcomes in collaboration with community partners. Prepare reports, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. Stay informed about current issues, policies, and best practices related to Indigenous health and wellness.

Advisory Circle Coordination:



Coordinate and support the Indigenous Advisory Circle, ensuring respectful engagement, culturally appropriate meeting protocols, and timely follow-up on recommendations. Work with Advisory Circle members to co-develop health and wellness priorities, program plans, and evaluation measures. Maintain strong relationships with Advisory Circle members through regular communication, transparency, and follow-up.

Other duties as assigned.

Participate actively in staff meetings and participate in the overall activities of the health center. Communicate clearly, listen accurately, is open to feedback, handle conflict appropriately, and display sensitivity to others. Always maintain the reputation and confidentiality of the health center and its clients. Work in a manner that respects and values the diversity of communities and individuals. Work in a manner that reflects our mission, values, and service delivery approach. Adhere to all applicable Peterborough CHC policies and procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS



All employees of PCHC are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening upon hire and every 3-5 years thereafter. Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all CHC occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Standard First Aid and CPR (or willingness to obtain upon hire) Due to the requirements of this position, a valid Ontario driver's license, use of own vehicle and proof of valid insurance is required. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Unconscious Bias training (or willingness to obtain upon hire)

QUALIFICATIONS



Education and Work Experience:



Degree or diploma in Public Health, Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Health Promotion, or a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and lived and/or professional experience. Experience working with local Indigenous communities and an understanding of traditional protocols. Lived experience as an Indigenous person is recognized as a valued form of expertise, contributing to culturally safe client relationships and to the organization's integration of Indigenous-informed approaches across all services.

Skills & Knowledge:



Knowledge of Indigenous health issues, traditional healing practices, and wellness frameworks. Strong communication, facilitation, and community engagement skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders in culturally appropriate ways. Experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data analysis tools.

Physical Demands

- Long periods of sitting and in front of a computer, typing and some walking. Lifting of some objects up to five pounds.

Environment

- Mainly an indoor office environment with exposure to outside during travel and events. Exposure to health hazards include, infectious diseases, potential physical and verbal violence, working alone, slips trips and fall, uncontrolled substances and other. It is important that the employee be able to identify hazards, have the knowledge and training to handle any situation. Minimal exposure to hazardous material such as cleaning supplies.

Mental Effort

- Quick thinking for frequent handling of difficult situations that some may find stressful and / or upsetting. A CHC is a busy environment that can be frequently noisy and interruptive. The incumbent will need excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks. Travel to various Indigenous communities and partner locations may be required. Flexible working hours, including some evenings or weekends for community events. Combination of office-based work and field/community engagement.
Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Metis) candidates under the Ontario Human Rights Code, Section 24(1), and the organization's approved Special Program (Section 14) to address systemic barriers.
