Through their dedication, training and commitment to seniors, our team members transform the lives of older adults through a variety of programs and services, including long-term care, senior living apartments, fitness, community wellness and social programs.
Our long-term care services provide a homey environment and programs for frail seniors, while our independent living apartments are perfect for more active seniors. Our fitness and community programs support local seniors living at home, while also providing them with the opportunity to socialize with their peers, learn new skills, and stay healthy and fit. JOB DESCRIPTION
:
Summer Student Intern - Community Recreation Therapist Aide with Shalom Village. This internship is a Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) temporary funded position. This position involves working directly with a recreation therapist. Using their knowledge of recreational therapy, gerontology or kinesiology the student will engage in several activities throughout Shalom Village to maintain and improve the quality and social interactions of the community participants of our Goldies Adult Day Program.
The Recreation Therapist Aide assists the team with developing and delivering programs and activities to adult day program participants to ensure their physical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional needs are met.
Within this role the student will be able to interact with other health professions including other staff such as Personal Support Worker, Registered Nurse, Physiotherapist and Recreation Therapist to get a team perspective when working with the older adults.
KEY DELIVERABLES
Assist with facilitating large and small group activities and outings;
Adapting programs for older adults, using program strategies and techniques for working with residents living with mild cognitive impairments and social isolation;
Work one-to-one with residents requiring additional therapeutic support;
Be an ambassador for health promotion, fitness and active living throughout Shalom Village, and educate and inspire older adults about the benefits of social interactions through activities.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
An individual who is a recent graduate or is currently enrolled in a University/College recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, gerontology or another related field from an Ontario post-secondary institution.
As per the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) - Articles of Agreement the successful individual must meet the following requirements:
be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
*Note: International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
