Job Description

Working out of the Department of National Defence (DND) Office within the Bluenose Building in Dartmouth NS, the CSC Project-Systems Engineer will support modelling, data integration, analysis and Verification & Validation (V&V) activities for the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) project. The Project-Systems Engineer may also have the opportunity to support other project tasks as required by project demands, including Modelling and Simulation (M&S), Synthetic Environment Support, and Integrated Test & Evaluation (IT&E) activities. This position is a full-time, permanent position.

Weir Marine Engineering provides a broad range of multi-disciplinary engineering and technical services related to naval equipment, including marine systems, combat and control systems, and information and communication systems to the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). Weir provides direct support to the Project Management Office (CSC) for the Canadian Surface Combatant Project (CSC) located at DND's Offices at the Bluenose building in Dartmouth. Weir staff provide test and evaluation services in a wide variety of technical areas.

Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Development of Logical and Physical Architectures using the Unified Architecture Framework and the latest Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies;

Development of Enterprise Architecture models including process flows, organizational structures and interactions, project dependencies and capability management models;

Development and review of Use Cases to illustrate Concepts of Operation;

Supporting reviews of subcontractor developed design materials;

Supporting Systems Engineering Lifecycle phase reviews;

Integration of system parameters and behaviour models with mission scenarios and measurements of effectiveness to create executable parametric models;

Verification, Validation and Accreditation of the models developed using NASA standards; and

Integration of equipment models into a synthetic ship.

The Project-Systems Engineer may also assist with:

Performance and Behaviour M&S of Naval equipment;

Development and V&V of environmental models and large scale scenarios;

Analysis of equipment performance using M&S and live test & trials data;

Developing Software Requirements and performing Software Testing;

Configuring and managing synthetic environments including hardware and software elements;

Supporting Integrated Testing, Evaluation & Acceptance (ITEA) processes; and

Supporting requirements management processes including requirements decomposition, traceability and verification.

Required Competencies:

Familiarity with the techniques and processes of systems engineering and MBSE;

Ability to learn complex engineering concepts, ideas and processes;

Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-experts, verbally and in writing;

Experience in dealing with customers and suppliers is desirable; and

Familiarity with data modelling languages and MBSE methodologies/frameworks such as UML, SysML, DODAF, DNDAF and UAF is highly desirable.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Industrial, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience;

Experience working with naval systems is highly desirable.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations, Special Skills:

  • Eligible to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which requires Canadian citizenship and 10 years of residence in Canada (MANDATORY).
Language:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proficient in technical writing in English and ability to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients.
Scientific & Mathematical Skills:
  • Enthusiasm for problem solving;
  • Understanding of Engineering Analysis and/or statistical methods;
  • Ability to understand the underlying physics of the equipment performance;
  • Ability to define technical requirements.
Computer Skills:
  • Programming experience, especially in MATLAB or Python;
  • Experience with databases and SQL;
  • Experience with Data Analysis of large datasets;
  • Experience with data formats such as JSON and XML.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite especially Excel.
Work Environment:
  • A combination of office and lab environments;
  • Team environment requiring collaboration with other analysts;
  • Travel of short duration may be required to various destinations in North America;
  • Drivers license is highly desirable as well as willingness to drive in other countries.
