ATOC 184 - The Science of Storms (3 credits)
Course description:
Physical processes associated with severe and hazardous weather affecting the Earth. Topics are taught at a fundamental level, without equations, to provide a complete and up-to-date understanding of such extreme events as blizzards, ice storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and droughts.
Job description:

• Prepare formal lectures and lead class discussions on the topics of:
• Overview of storm science,
• Properties of the atmosphere,
• Meteorological measurements,
• Weather maps and forecasting,
• Forces, force balances, and the jet stream,
• High and low-pressure system development,
• Cold waves,
• Nor-easters and Blizzards,
• Lake-effect snowstorms.
• Administer tests and examinations in conformity with McGill regulations.
• Mark assignments and tests and submit final grades online using McGill systems.

Class lectures are 3 hours a week for 13 weeks per term. (05-Jan-2026 to 14-Apr-2026)

Qualifications:
Must have a PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, or a related field.
Must have prior experience teaching this course at McGill or relevant teaching experience at a university or college level.
