Studio Description: This studio explores the intersection of architectural representation, cinematic techniques, and embodied narratives. Working at the boundary between architectural design and time-based media, students will investigate how architectural space can be conceived, documented, and experienced through temporal, sensorial, cultural, and performative dimensions. Students will develop projects that investigate architectures of embodiment, exploring how built form can emerge from studies of movement, sound, light, and narrative structure.
Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) Student Performance Criteria (SPC): A1, A2, A4, A5, A6
Themes and Pedagogical Approach: The studio will operate as an experimental laboratory where students: Study precedents that bridge architecture, film, and performance. Design Theory is covered through weekly lectures, presentations, and cinematic engagements; Develop techniques/methods for documenting, analyzing, and designing movement, affect, and embodied experience in space through weekly exercises and critical evaluations; Translate temporal experiences into spatial propositions forming the basis of the midterm design proposal and review; Create and communicate architectural interventions that engage with narratives, performance, and cinematic thinking culminating in a Final Review structured as a performance/exhibition hybrid.
Learning Outcomes. Upon completion of this studio, students will be able to: 1) Critically analyze architectural space through temporal, cultural, narrative, and sensorial frameworks; 2) Develop innovative techniques for translating between different media and modes of representation; 3) Create architectural propositions that engage with embodied experience and movement; 4) Employ experimental documentation techniques alongside traditional architectural representation; 5) Articulate a theoretical position on the relationship between architecture, cinema, and performance; 6) Demonstrate competence in CACB Student Performance Criteria A1, A2, A4, A5, and A6.
Coordination Notes: All candidates will work closely with the Director as well as the Studio Coordinator to ensure that their course material meets the University Calendar regulations, the pedagogical objectives of the School and the specific Canadian Architectural Certification Board Student Performance Criteria.
Studio coordinator: Prof. Alan Dunyo Avorgbedor
