Job Description

Everywoman's Health Centre is a Vancouver abortion, contraception, and sexual health clinic providing excellent care in a supportive, safe, and confidential setting. www.everywomanshealthcentre.ca

We have an immediate opening for a casual counsellor to provide counselling services relating to pregnancy issues. This includes decision-making, pre- and post-abortion, and contraceptive counselling. The Counsellor explains the abortion procedure and obtains informed consent, and provides contraceptive and reproductive health education and counselling.

NOTE: This casual position is for occasional shifts for relief for vacation or sick leave. It is truly a casual role with the expected shifts available to initially average one or two days per month. In your cover letter please indicate why you are interested in a casual position, and your availability for short notice sick-leave coverage. Days/Hours of work:

7:45AM to 3:45PM during weekdays (Monday to Friday) with actual days to be determined. Shifts will be occasional as required by Everywoman's Health Centre's operational requirements.

Salary Range:

According to the Health Science Professionals Collective Agreement, Wage Schedule I , P1. The 2024 wage range is $42.27 to $52.81 per hour, plus 13% in lieu of holidays and vacation. The wage is anticipated to increase when a new Collective Agreement is negotiated.

Benefits:

As per the HSP collective agreement. As a casual you are not initially eligible for health and dental benefits.

Job Summary:



1. Provides non-coercive counselling services to women and their support persons relating to pregnancy and reproductive health issues. This includes decision-making, abortion counselling, post-abortion counselling and addressing related emotional, spiritual, relationship and decision concerns.

2. Provides accurate information about abortion while counteracting misinformation and stigma. Explains the procedure and its risks, provides support with pre-and post-procedure issues, and obtains informed consent.

3. Provides information on pain management and may provide emotional support during the procedure if necessary

4. Provides birth control information and counselling. Aids clients in selecting appropriate methods and troubleshooting difficulties in/barriers to use.

5. Provides information about sexual health, sexuality, sexual transmitted infections, and does HIV pre-test counselling.

6. Maintains and provides written resources on birth control, abortion and other related topics. Provides information about community resources and facilitates referrals where necessary.

9. Participates in research projects where necessary by informing and gaining consent of the clients and asking client research questions as developed and provided by the lead researcher.

10. Performs administrative functions or related duties where required, such as charting, ordering, filing, updating written materials, and other duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience:



1. Bachelor's Degree in counselling, psychology, social work, or a related allied health discipline.

2. Minimum 2 years' experience counselling in women's health,

3. Registered Clinical Counsellor or equivalent designation is a very strong asset.

Skills and Abilities:



1. Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, particularly contraception

2. Ability to build rapport with women from a wide range of age groups and backgrounds and to communicate effectively with others, including cross culturally and in an accessible way about sensitive and stigmatized topics

3. Ability to professionally guide clients in crisis and to work with clients with multiple barriers

4. Ability to hold a compassionate and non-judgemental space for, and when necessary, to de-escalate strong emotions

5. A demonstrated prochoice, client-centered approach

6. Understanding of and experience working with the variety of issues that may arise in a counselling session, including addiction, mental health, and disclosures of abuse, sexual assault, and relationship violence.

7. With our diverse client base, proficiency in a second language,-especially Punjabi, Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin,-would be a strong asset.
