Job Description

The Provincial ADHD Program is looking for a Counselling Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals working with individuals who have been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). The program is funded by the Department of Social Development and Housing and UPEI. The Counselling Therapist will provide direct service to clients 16+ who are referred to the Provincial Adult ADHD Clinic and work closely with other members of the Provincial ADHD Clinic. They will Participate in team meetings, coaching and mentoring sessions and individual/group counselling sessions. The Counselling Therapist will report to the Manager of the Provincial Adult ADHD Clinic.RESPONSIBILITIES:The Counselling Therapist will be expected to directly engage in or supervise the following:

• Provide a wide range of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and consultation services for individuals who are referred to the Provincial ADHD Program for Adults. The individuals may have multiple co-morbidities, including past criminal behaviors
• Assist in developing and monitoring short and long-term plans, and counsel patients on lifestyle issues, organizational skills, time management
• Perform Psycho-social assessments - identifying high risk situations to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and their families/support networks. The assessment includes considering employment, housing finances, supports, etc.
• Determine the needs and eligibility for services/resources and explore barriers, identify coping strategies
• Act as an advocate on behalf of the individual and their families/support network. They shall provide support and referrals as appropriate
• Coordinate and participate in case conferences
• Provide support to other team members; contribute to the inter-disciplinary effort in improving quality medical/psycho-social care, provide services support and counseling to individuals and their families as they deal with their diagnosis and co-morbidities
• Follow up with individuals as required to ensure they are meeting their goals; provide education and support to understand their condition, triggers and how to manage impulse control, excessive anger and behaviors
• Maintain and protect confidential records and case reporting consistent with policy, procedures, and ethical standards
• Book patients and document their interactions using the Provincial Collaborative Health Record (CHR)
• Liaise with other program/population areas (e.g. Holland College, Provincial Corrections, 2SLGBTQIA etc.). This could include assessing the clinical needs of these communities and augment traditional clinical service with evidence informed clinical outreach
• Perform other duties as required to facilitate the functioning of the Provincial Adult ADHD Clinic, which includes but is not limited to contributing to operational policy development and day to day functioning of the clinic

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in social work, counselling therapy, or psychology with considerable clinical mental health and substance use experience.
• Must be eligible for registration with the PEI Social Work Registration Board, College of Counselling Therapists of PEI, or the PEI Psychologists Registration Board; where currently registered, must be a member in good standing.
• Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with relevant stakeholders (e.g., UPEI/Holland College students, Provincial Correctional Facility, law enforcement, other government agencies).
• Demonstrated effective professional skills including time management, organizational skills, self-reliance, interpersonal skills, oral and written skills, effective team building skills, collaborative, and consultative practice skills.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, clinical judgement, and independent decision-making skills in order to develop, monitor and implement care plans.
• Working knowledge of the DSM-5, Mental Health Act, FOIPP, Consent to Treatment Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Health Professions Act, Health Information Act and other legislative frameworks as needed.
• Working knowledge of relevant board or college Code of Ethics.
• Good work attendance record.
• Training in relevant therapeutic modalities including but not limited to CBT and DBT.
• Related clinical experience that would be an asset includes;
• Experience working with adults with ADHD
• Experience in conducting initial psychological assessments.
• Experience working with resistant and aggressive client groups, vulnerable and at-risk populations, as well as with cultural and other group and personal diversities.
• Experience working with clients with complex needs, chronic illness, mental illness, substance use/addiction, concurrent disorders, and cognitive decline.
• Relevant training such as: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Violence Risk Assessment training.
