Reporting to the Senior Financial Analyst in the Banking section of Accounting Services, the Corporate Accounting Assistant 1 is responsible for a number of responsibilities related to bank reconciliations, including reconciling, analyzing and preparing required working papers for a number of the City\'s bank accounts; preparation of journal entries related to banking transactions including supporting documents; review of financial system entries to identify potential internal control issues, recording and reporting errors and omissions that may result in inaccurate and untimely recognition of financial information, and liaising with divisions to recommend corrective action, strengthening of internal controls and adherence to City financial and accounting policies.
Major Responsibilities:
Preparation of bank reconciliations.
Analyzes, reconciles and monitors the City\'s more complex general ledger accounts.
Reconciles, analyzes and prepares working papers to support account balances and reconciliations, used in the preparation of the City\'s annual financial statements, provincial information return and other financial and statistical reports.
Prepares and supports journal entries related to banking transactions.
Reviews financial system reports and reconciliations to identify potential errors and omissions, ensure that internal controls are followed in accordance with City policies, and confirm compliance of entries based on public sector accounting standards.
Creates and executes ad hoc financial reports for analysis purposes.
Provides advice to divisions with respect to proper use of cost centres and cost elements to recognize expenditure transactions.
Coordinates divisional projects, assignments, analysis as required.
Monitors relevant provincial statutes and regulations, City financial and accounting policies for changes and incorporates requirements into execution of responsibilities, where appropriate.
Prepares input into the design of databases, financial reports, dashboards and process improvements.
Participates in collaborative cross-divisional discussions, providing advice and guidance where appropriate.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to: * Present enrollment towards the CPA Professional designation (e.g. CPA Professional Education Program (PEP), completed Core 1 and 2 course requirements) or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Extensive experience with computer-based accounting systems, e.g. SAP.
Considerable accounting and financial reporting and analysis experience in a public or private sector accounting environment.
Considerable experience with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel and Word).
Considerable experience providing work direction, training, guidance and support to staff.
You must also have:
Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills, with the abilitny to work independently with minimum supervision, prioritize work schedules, plan and execute assigned duties within tight timelines.

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
Strong ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with various levels of staff within the City and other organizations.
Ability to exercise independent judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential operational matters.
Ability to maintain accurate and orderly electronic and manual files.
Advanced knowledge of financial and internal controls and strong knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards.
Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and federal and provincial legislation that would be relevant to this position.
Familiarity with government legislation in the area of Occupational Health & Safety. Ability to work overtime as required.
