Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Student Centre and working in close collaboration with internal and external partners, the Coordinator, Indigenous Community Outreach facilitates enhanced and reciprocally beneficial relationships between the University, Indigenous alumni, faculty, and community partners and organizations which support a range of opportunities for Indigenous students at OCAD University (OCAD U). The Coordinator supports features of experiential learning, including curricular and co-curricular opportunities and related programming. The Coordinator develops and maintains the Indigenous Alumni Circle, connecting alumni with current and prospective Indigenous students through programming and events, offering mentorship and guidance to support emerging Indigenous artists, designers and related professionals in their career development.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Manager, Indigenous Student Centre, and in collaboration with partners from across the University, plan and support programs for Indigenous students and recent graduates that enhance access to experiential learning and professional development opportunities, and conduct outreach to establish meaningful connections with the Indigenous Alumni Circle, employers and community

Consult widely with Indigenous faculty, OCAD U's Indigenous Education Council for the purposes of their involvement

Work in consultation with Alumni Relations in conducting outreach, promotion and support for the development of an OCAD U Indigenous Alumni Circle

Work in collaboration with Admissions & Recruitment in developing relationships with Indigenous alumni to support a network of recent alumni featured as practitioners and creative catalysts who support potential OCAD U applicants and the OCAD U community

Work closely with the RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers to support the alignment of community outreach with experiential learning, career development and creative entrepreneurship pathways, as well as promoting resources, advising, risk management and culturally safe evaluation processes

Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with Indigenous alumni, employers, community organizations and other partners to stimulate employer interest in Indigenous students and graduates, and build opportunities based on reciprocal needs of students, partners and OCAD U

Contribute to a strategic outreach plan alongside Indigenous OCAD U community members that builds reciprocal relationships between Indigenous OCAD U and their communities and creates opportunities to establish reciprocal relationships with new communities

Develop programming and events to engage Indigenous alumni with current and prospective Indigenous students for mentorship, support and career development

Meet regularly with students, community partners and organizations, faculty, and staff to discuss issues and plan for on-going improvements

Participate in the development of collaborative projects/programs that will support Indigenous students' needs as well as meet curriculum objectives

Provide support in assessing proposals for partnerships between organizations, community agencies and OCAD U and involve Indigenous program chairs, faculty and staff to create tangible opportunities for Indigenous students

Assist the Manager, Indigenous Student Centre in related functions contributing to the successful operations of the Centre

Qualifications:

Post-secondary degree, with a focus in art or design preferred, with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience with the administration of Indigenous community programming, education and arts

Understanding of Indigenous cultural, educational, political and economic conditions

Experience with implementing experiential learning theory, practices and models in the higher education and/or community sectors, as well as post-secondary student development

Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be an active contributor in the planning, formulation and implementation of student-centered services

Proven track record of productive relationship development resulting in quantifiable outcomes

Ability to build rapport and work collaboratively with students, faculty and staff

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong self-management skills

Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgement, and diplomacy

Demonstrated attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently and participate collaboratively in a team environment

Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty

Compensation: Hiring Range - $54,158.84 to $61,965.30 per annum, commensurate with experience, plus benefits; Salary Range - $54,158.84 to $71,191.96 per annum.

Hours of Work: Total of 35 hours per week. The incumbent in this role will be expected to report to work on campus.
