Job Description

The Coordinator, Communications and Student Advising develops, implements, and maintains the communications profile of the Geography Department through print, web, electronic, and other media. The role works collaboratively with faculty and staff to conceive, develop, and distribute communications highlighting the achievements of faculty, students, alumni, and staff. The Coordinator conceptualizes and organizes events that help with recruiting new students, to raise the public profile and support the objectives of the Geography Department. In addition, the position provides advice to potential and registered undergraduate students of the academic requirements for the Department of Geography in accordance with university, faculty, departmental, and program policies, procedures, and regulations. Reviews academic records and approves admission to Geography programs.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a related discipline with four years of related experience, including experience in writing, communications, event planning, and website design, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of communications principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal secondary and post-secondary education issues.
  • Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, diversity, gender, race, ethnicity, aboriginal, sexual identity and socioeconomic issues; knowledge of the needs of a diverse student body, including the needs of students with disabilities and multi-faith communities.
  • Excellent writing, copy editing, and layout skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Excellent multi-tasking, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent event management skills.
  • Excellent interview and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Skilled in the use of student information systems and software applications, such as database, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing applications.
  • Excellent ability to use specialized design software applications (i.e., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.).
  • Ability to use digital photography, videography, and sound recording, and to perform associated editing and manipulation of materials.
  • Ability to conceive, research, and develop content for various forms of written and graphic communications.
  • Ability to conceptualize, develop, and manage strategic creative projects within timelines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment, sensitivity, and tact.
  • Proficient in the use of standard office, web publishing, online content management systems, and graphic design applications (i.e., Dreamweaver, Flash, AEM).
Assignment Start Date: as soon as possible

Assignment End Date: 18 months from start date
