Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated, innovative, customer-focused analyst, with a keen interest in data-science, strategic analysis, and program evaluation to join our Analytics Data Services team which has been rated as one of the best in the Canadian public sector. As a Data Strategist and Architect co-op student, you'll contribute to the effectiveness of WorkSafeBC by designing and developing of shared data environments, including software applications, websites, intranets, and online communities. This involves developing well structured, organized, and usable environments that facilitate data accessibility and effective communication across the entire WorkSafeBC enterprise. You're a team player and a strong communicator with sound problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Working closely with analysts and managers in the Analytics Data Services department and project teams, the student works with a wide variety of business units and technology staff, management, and clients on data architectures, repositories, strategies, and solutions that maximize WorkSafeBC's data value and integrated architecture. Key responsibility areas include: application data architecture, architecture standards and extensibility, business data and architecture training, shared and common data, EDM designer and data architecture implementation.

This is a four- or eight-month full-time co-op student opportunity starting January 2023. WorkSafeBC has adopted a hybrid model offering opportunities to work remotely and onsite based on the operational needs of the position.

What you'll do

As an Data Strategist and Architect co-op student, you will:

  • Identifies and analyses data requirements for application data architecture and refines the requirements in light of the business processes the data must support, including anticipated future uses
  • Develops the data viewpoint of software architectures and supporting models, e.g. conceptual models and fact models that reflect the business data requirements
  • Creates, reviews, verifies and validates data models with clients and project teams
  • Identifying and creating standards that define how different concerns of data/information architecture will be governed;
  • Consults with stakeholders across I&T to make sure that the body of data/information architecture standards, guidelines and best practices addresses their requirements;
  • Identifies, analyzes, and documents all data that needs to be modeled, managed and used as shared corporate data (e.g. master data)
  • Classifies enterprise logical entities and relationships into appropriate business subject areas with associated relationships to related entities
  • Works with the business to define common definitions of entities and attributes
  • Consults with, advises, and directs data, business, and systems analysts to determine EDM subject areas that pertain to project scope
  • Resolves project data and process model issues and conflicts that pertain to the EDM
  • Assists in the implementation physical data architecture (e.g. translation of logical to physical, data pipelines, etc.) in low-code/no-code implementations where another team is available for long-term sustainability and operational support.
  • Researches new developments in the data/information architecture discipline and proposes ways to apply new strategies to data architecture in WorkSafeBC

Your experience and educational background:
  • Enrolled in any of the following majors or specializations: Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, Consulting & Strategic Management, Business Technology Management (
), Business Analytics and Decision Making, Data Science, Finance - , Accounting, Statistics/Mathematics, or Operations Management/Research, or Business Analytics. * Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office: MS Excel, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint, Visio, Adobe Suite, Outlook.
  • Experience in relational database management systems; applied mathematics and statistics, DBMS software, including SQL Server; database and cloud computing design, architectures and data lakes; Data visualization, data migration and data modeling; reporting, or statistical tools would be an asset: Power BI, SSRS, SQL, Tableau, Business Objects / SAP - Web Intelligence, Xcelsius, Crystal Reports, SPSS, SAS, Python, R, Microstrategy, Microsoft Reporting Services, Performance Point.
