Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Cooperative & Career Education, the incumbent\xe2\x80\x99s role is to facilitate the success of co-op, using teaching methodologies, to develop and deliver career planning and job search courses and to assist students, both individually and in a classroom environment, as they prepare to enter the workforce. The incumbent also works as part of the Co-op/Internship team to support and advise Program Coordinators of pre/post work term experiences. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for implementing and managing strategies which ensure academic learning is transferred to the workplace, and vice versa, through on-site visits and support to both students and employers regarding performance and learning issues.

What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Be Doing

  • Developing, preparing and delivering Career Development instruction of credit course in a classroom environment to Co-op students;
  • Preparing and advising students through in class lectures, exercises and role plays, to develop strategies that will help them successfully make the transition from college to the workplace;
  • Evaluating student progress and job readiness through delivery and assessment of assignments;
  • Submitting grades on the student information system for the Career Development and work term courses in accordance with academic deadlines;
  • Assisting students to identify learning outcomes in their program to build on individual capabilities and confidence, overcome employment barriers, and strategize on how to market themselves effectively;
  • Counseling students during individual appointments, telephone and email discussions
  • Advising students in the creation of a professional resume and cover letter, interview techniques, wage negotiation, professional etiquette and overall decision making while seeking co-op employment;
  • Using co-op software to keep track of students and employers, and generating reports and records;
  • Promoting co-op to prospective students, previewing applications, and verifying academic standing;
  • Determining acceptance of student applicants into the co-op option, discussing student academic standing with the program coordinator where grades are in question
  • Conducting on site and/or telephone follow up monitors, during student work terms to meet objectives;
  • Soliciting feedback from the student and employer on student\xe2\x80\x99s progress on the job and then through mediation, assisting with resolution of any performance or work issues;
  • Following up with employer and student to address issues;
  • Evaluating and assigning academic grades to each co-op student record in the student database;
  • Advising Program Advisory Committees and Program Co-ordinators of employer feedback to assist them in ensuring program content is current and relevant to labour market needs;
  • Developing and implementing comprehensive marketing and communication plans to foster partnerships with employers, faculty and students;
  • Planning the ongoing development of co-op job opportunities through marketing to employers and maintaining existing employer relationships;
  • Establishing appropriate expectations related to students on placement and assisting in the development of performance measures to support learning outcomes;
  • Troubleshooting on-site placements to aid in the assessment and resolution of performance issues;
  • Assisting employers in the development of job descriptions and qualifying the suitability of existing job opportunities by using in depth knowledge of program competencies, and student capabilities;
  • Participating in the implementation of new electronic processes to provide expertise relating to Co-op utilization, needs and processes;
  • Representing department at special events;
  • Assisting in developing and negotiating entry criteria and maintenance standards for Co-op programs;
  • Performing other related duties assigned.
About You You have the knowledge and skill required to guide, advise and support a diverse population of post-secondary students towards a successful job search in their field of study using up-to-date job search approaches, techniques and strategies. You have exemplary organizational, time management and communication skills. You have solid computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
  • 3-year diploma/degree in Business, Computer Science, Social Science, or a related field
  • 5 years of relevant experience in Career Counselling/Employment Preparation (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver classroom content at a post-secondary standard of facilitation and instruction
  • Expertise using contact management, database systems and student information systems will be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with the provisions, practices and trends of CEWIL Canada, EWO and CACEE that relate to Cooperative Education are an asset - Familiarity with relevant career development theories will be considered an asset
