Position Summary Working within the Early Childhood Development department the Cook will plan, prepare, and serve the children within our Preschool & Daycare Centre, which includes, snacks. The cook with also, assist with and ensure that the cleanup, dishes, and overall cleanliness of the program food prep area is always up to health standard.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do
  • Plan and prepare meals for special events in collaboration with other school cooks as requested by the Manager
  • Order food supplies and equipment once they have been pre-approved
  • Prepare updated monthly food menus and submits to Manager distribution.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of workers who prepare, cook, serve food, clean premises, and wash dishware.
  • Provide a well-balanced and nutritional service, considering dietary/allergy needs and specific dietary requests (i.e.: vegetarian/vegan etc.).
  • Ensure that the food is ready at the required times and in sufficient quantities.
  • Keep daily records of meals served and takes inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure that the daily menu is communicated to all staff \xe2\x80\x93 including any ingredients that may cause allergic reactions (i.e.: soya, nuts etc.).
  • May be required to purchase food items for the school from the designated grocery store.
  • Provide such assistance, attendance and participation in school activities and the Seabird Island Annual Festival.
  • Respect and abide by the line of authority as established by the Employer.
  • Ensure compliance with Food Safety and Health & Safety Regulations.
  • Ensure that stock is rotated correctly (i.e.: First In, First Out) - to prevent food from becoming out of date. Check expiration dates on a regular basis.
  • Check deliveries to ensure that the orders are correct and conform to the necessary quality. Also, to ensure that any errors are reported immediately and rectified.
  • Ensure that all food temperature charts are completed daily (delivery, fridge & freezer, core cooking, hot holding, cooling etc.).
  • Ensure that food wastage is minimized, and a record kept of all food wastage.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness within the kitchen and all dining areas.
  • Ensure that required disinfection takes place regularly.
  • Ensure that a high level of hygiene is maintained by all staff in the kitchen at all times and that protective clothing is worn.
  • May be required to participate in daily meetings with the Management and Staff to discuss the requirements for each day.
  • Be fully aware of and understand the duties and responsibilities arising from the Children\xe2\x80\x99s Act and Working Together in relation to child protection and safeguarding children and young people.
  • Communicate from a bias-free perspective.
  • Conduct self in such a manner as not to bring discredit or disrespect upon the Employer or the Seabird Island Community.
  • Abide by polices set out in ECE, School and Band policy manuals.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Director, or the CAO

What you bring Education
  • A certificate from an accredited college, (food service/dietary management, culinary arts or a closely related area is preferred) or completion of a course of study in professional cooking, combined with experience may be considered.
  • 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience as a line cook or larger scale kitchen operation.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
  • Valid BC Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License, Class 5.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Experience
  • Knowledge of good dietary practice and nutritional options.
  • Proficiency in the preparation of large quantities of food.
  • Knowledge of principles, tools, and techniques of food service management, including planning and purchasing supplies.
  • Knowledge of general principles of menu planning, modification of recipes, preparation of foods, and appropriate food cooking temperatures.
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures, procurement and storing of food items and supplies.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, and procedures of volume food preparations: food values, characteristics, and nutrition; personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation and safety precautions.
  • Ability to lift/unload food and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely and as per manufacturer\xe2\x80\x99s instructions.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of St\xc3\xb3: l\xc5\x8d culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
