The Controls Programmer is responsible for designing, developing, and troubleshooting control systems for custom automation equipment. They will be required to program PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, industrial robots, SCADA systems, machine vision systems, and specialized controllers while collaborating with production teams, sales and clients to ensure efficient, reliable equipment operation.

This role requires strong technical and problem-solving skills to develop and optimize control systems, ensure seamless equipment performance, and collaborate effectively across departments.

Key Responsibilities:



Design, develop, troubleshoot, and document programs for custom automation equipment. Program control systems using PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, industrial robots, SCADA systems, machine vision systems, and specialized controllers. Coordinate with production shop floor and manufacturing clients during development and troubleshooting of equipment. Develop and implement new concepts to improve productivity, profitability, and safety in manufacturing processes. Demonstrate initiative in identifying opportunities for process improvements and collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions. Participate in corrective action processes, including root cause analysis, to address production challenges. Develop, program, validate and maintain safety systems, including safety PLCs, robots, servos, VFDs, and related control devices. Communicate effectively with the team and customers regarding the status of current projects, project concerns, and potential solutions. Assist with troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment and processes. Adhere to project timelines and budget requirements. Follow all BCCI policies and adheres to health and safety protocols and procedures. Is available to work overtime and travel globally. Completes general and other assigned tasks.

Education & Experience:



Diploma/Degree in Electrical Engineering or Equivalent Specialized Experience. Minimum 3+ years' experience (preferred) in automation and controls. Experience in system/controls development and integration of factory automation equipment. Working knowledge of applicable Safety Standards (ISO 13849-1, CSA Z432, CSA Z434). Proficient with at least one of the following PLC/HMI platforms: Allen Bradley, Siemens or Omron. Proficient with at least one of the following industrial robot platforms: FANUC, Motoman, KUKA or ABB. Proficient with machine vision equipment; Camera and controllers, barcode scanners, 2D/3D profilers. Working knowledge of industrial networking; Ethernet IP, Profinet, EtherCAT. Working knowledge of SCADA systems (preferred).

PLC/HMI Programming. Robot Programming. Machine Vision Programming. Ability to solve problems effectively and maintain a high level of attention to detail. Ability to collaborate with the team to identify, design, and execute efficient solutions while overcoming obstacles through effective communication and teamwork. Ability to work independently, within a team environment and actively participate in team meetings. Ability to use technology, resources, and time in an efficient matter. Electrically or mechanically inclined with a strong understanding of processes, expected outcomes, and an interest in how systems and equipment function. Knowledge of Health and Safety protocols and procedures. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and have excellent computer skills. Standard First Aid/CPR-C (asset).
