As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am - 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.


Position Description:



Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller plans, directs and coordinates all operational functions of the Finance department, including internal and external financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and cash management. The Controller oversees the maintenance of internal controls and ensures that monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements are prepared in accordance with Accounting Standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations (ASNPO). The Controller is also focused on the development of Finance staff by managing performance, setting goals, coaching, and upholding a high standard in all aspects of the department performance is an important part of this position.


Responsibilities:




Support the preparation and development of the annual budget in collaboration with other departments Monitor and review monthly account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of key balance sheet items Oversee filing of annual charity information return and other tax compliance or statutory obligations Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory, tax, and financial reporting requirements Lead interim and year-end audits, acting as primary liaison with external auditors to ensure and efficient and effective audit Provide insightful and timely financial analysis and reporting to support executive decision-making and strategic planning Conduct ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as needed to address emerging business needs Prepare investment portfolio summaries by translating complex financial data into clear, concise and accurate reports Partner with operational leaders to support cost management, profitability analysis, and performance monitoring of key projects Champion continuous improvement in financial systems, reporting tools, and operational processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy Develop, implement, and enforce robust internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and workflows to safeguard organizational assets Provide strong, supportive leadership to the Finance team, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and high performance Manage and mentor finance staff through goal setting, performance monitoring, coaching, and professional development Serve as a cross-functional resource within the Finance department, providing support in key areas such as payroll during planned or unplanned absences Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World Perform other related duties and special projects as required to adapt to evolving business needs

Qualifications:




Bachelor's degree and CPA designation Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, ASNPO (preferred) A minimum of 7 years' full cycle accounting experience, including reporting financial to management and external stakeholders Experience managing and coordinating audit activities, managing reporting, and analysis Experience working in a not-for-profit environment (preferred) Able to identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions Proficient in Microsoft Office Software Knowledge of UKG (Payroll), Beanworks (Account Payable Software) and SAGE 300 (or other similar industry-standard accounting and payroll software) desirable Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills Confident and Able to collaborate with all areas and levels of the organization Demonstrates flexibility, initiative and resourcefulness Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize workload and meet tight deadlines




The pay range for this position is $115,000 - $135,000 per year.
