Job Summary
The Controller serves the mission of the YMCA of Lethbridge by overseeing the full accounting cycle, leading internal financial reporting, and ensuring strong internal controls across the Association. The main goals of this position are:
1. Provide leadership to the Finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability, to meet strategic and operational goals.
2. Ensure the successful development and execution of finance strategies to ensure Association wide financial stability, mitigation of risk, and legal compliance.
3. Monitor trends and analytics relevant to initiatives and services within the Association to assess financial planning and proactively provide recommendations.

Nature & Scope
The Controller will be responsible leading and executing key Finance functions. The major responsibilities of this position are, but not limited to:
Leadership and Strategic Planning
Exemplify the YMCA of Lethbridge's Core Values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, and responsibility.
Collaborate with other departments, ensuring alignment of goals and objectives across the Association, timely communication and process updates, and committee engagement.
Promote a positive, inclusive work environment, responding to escalated concerns and resolving issues in a timely manner and in accordance with Association policies and guidelines.
Be a YMCA ambassador and strategic leader by identifying and implementing practices and frameworks which centre diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Disseminate Department specific and Association wide information through the Association efficiently and accurately.
Demonstrate a commitment to health and safety, incident management and emergency response.
Ensure compliance with all legislation and policies within scope and advise and assist management on interpretation and administration.
Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, providing considerable explanation, clarification, and tact on sensitive, complex, or controversial issues.
Organizational and Department Management
Lead by providing oversight and supervision to the Finance department, including training and development, performance management, and workforce planning for IT, risk management, privacy, payroll, and accounting functions.
Carry out complex tasks requiring an intense degree of mental concentration and the use of complicated analytical methods.
Maintain records of insurance policies and claims and prepare insurance renewals.
Mentor and model best practices, setting high standards for excellence in execution.
Attend all required YMCA trainings and recertifications.
Financial Management and Philanthropic Involvement
Champion and exemplify the Association's dedication to philanthropy.
Oversee and lead the development of the Association's annual budget including managing capital budgets, monitoring expenditures, ensuring compliance, accurately forecasting, investigating significant variances, and ensuring corrective measures are implemented.
Prepare monthly financial statements using Accounting Standards for Non-Profit Organizations.
Prepare and file GST returns.
Prepare and file Charitable return.
Ensure Payroll is complete, T4's are completed and filed, and remittances are completed.
Develop and champion finance strategies that are aligned with the strategic plan to help mitigate risks while enabling growth.
Drive the financial planning of the Association by analyzing performance and risks to retain a constant awareness of the financial position to proactively make recommendations.
Prepare timely and detailed reports on financial performance, including conducting an analysis to make forecasts and report as appropriate.
Assess Association's human, capital, infrastructure, and strategic readiness requirements in the department and make recommendations for investment.
External Relations and Advocacy
Be a YMCA ambassador and strategic leader in the community by developing partnerships and relationships through community groups, committee work, and outreach opportunities.
Educate others on Finance initiatives and projects, providing resources, coaching and recommendations to leaders on emerging trends and best practices with respect to all functional areas within the Finance department.
Follow policies regarding confidentiality to safeguard data and information and handle sensitive information with a strong sense of ethics and confidentiality, in addition to other Association policies and guidelines and applicable regulatory requirements and legislation.
Assess current community needs and identify recommendations, in alignment with the Association's strategic plan, of where to focus growth efforts.

Qualifications and Experience
CPA is required
Minimum of 5+ years of practical or lived experience is required
Supervisory experience is required
In-depth knowledge of corporate finance and accounting principles, laws, and best practice
Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting
Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software
Previous non-profit experience is considered an asset
Evidence of an acceptable Police Information Check and Child Intervention Check
