Job Description

Altex Industries Inc. is seeking an experienced, motivated, and hands-on

Controller

to lead our Finance, Accounting, and Payroll functions. The Controller will be responsible for full-cycle accounting, payroll oversight, financial reporting, compliance, and team leadership. This role requires a professional who is both technically strong and highly collaborative, with the ability to balance strategic financial management and day-to-day operational accuracy.

Key Responsibilities



Financial Management & Reporting



Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with complete working paper files supporting assets and liabilities. Review income and expense recognition for accurate financial reporting. Manage company cash flow to maintain finances within banking covenants. Perform all banking functions including deposits, fund transfers, reconciliations, currency conversions, EFT controls, and monthly reporting. Assist in the development of departmental budgets and prepare annual forecasts. Maintain sub-ledgers for accounts receivable/payable, job costing, payroll, and the general ledger. Work with CFO and external accountants to finalize year-end statements and tax returns. Maintain appropriate insurance coverage and oversee funding/cash management documentation and controls.

Payroll Oversight



Supervise payroll processing for unionized, salaried, and hourly employees, ensuring compliance with legislation, government reporting, and union agreements. Oversee payroll system integrity (

ADP Workforce Now, Synerion, Pronto

) and ensure accuracy of payroll records and reporting. Support audits, reconciliations, and year-end payroll filings (T4s, ROEs, tax remittances).

Accounting Operations



Supervise and review all accounts payable functions, handle supplier inquiries, schedule payment runs, and maintain the A/P sub-ledger. Oversee A/R and A/P administrators, ensuring accurate and timely processing. Approve expense claims and expenditures Liaise with tax auditors and external stakeholders as required.

Leadership & People Management



Lead and mentor the Finance/Accounting team, including setting job descriptions, conducting performance reviews, monitoring probationary periods, and addressing training needs. Monitor absenteeism, enforce discipline where necessary, and support professional development. Attend weekly production meetings to provide financial insight and ensure alignment with operations.

Qualifications & Skills



CPA designation (CA, CMA, or CGA) preferred.

7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with 3+ years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.

Strong hands-on experience with

payroll management

(unionized and multi-province preferred). Proficiency with

ADP Workforce Now, Synerion, Pronto,

and advanced Microsoft Excel. Superior analytical and accounting technical knowledge. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving ability. Motivated, energetic self-starter with sound judgment, common sense, and uncompromising ethics. Ability to work effectively with people at all levels and across multiple cultures. Proven leadership and people management skills.
