Johnstone Brothers Equipment Corp and Group of Companies is seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Controller to lead our financial function and support our growing operational needs. This position plays a critical role in overseeing all accounting activities, maintaining financial integrity, and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. The ideal candidate will also support administrative and HR functions while acting as a financial partner to operations and ownership.
We are looking for someone with a strong accounting foundation who can own the books, manage compliance deadlines, and contribute to analysis, planning, and ongoing business decisions. This is a leadership role that also supports process improvement and cross-departmental collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee full-cycle accounting including A/P, A/R, payroll, bank reconciliations, and general ledger.
Manage month-end and year-end close processes with accurate journal entries and accruals.
Prepare and present monthly financial statements, including income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow.
Maintain the integrity of the accounting system (NetSuite) and ensure timely, accurate entries.
Take responsibility for HST and other tax remittances; ensure full compliance with filing deadlines.
Lead preparation for year-end reviews and liaise with external accountants.
Analysis & Forecasting
Monitor and report on company cash flow and working capital.
Perform margin analysis, product line analysis, and overhead review to support decision-making.
Partner with leadership to create budgets and forecasts, and track performance to plan.
Process Management & Internal Controls
Improve and document financial workflows, policies, and procedures.
Maintain internal controls and oversee daily transaction integrity.
Lead initiatives to increase efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities.
Team Leadership & Office Support
Supervise bookkeeping or accounting support staff.
Support HR administration such as onboarding, employee records, and payroll coordination.
Manage office operations, including supplies, vendor contracts related to back office operations, and general administrative duties.
Ensure office procedures are efficient and compliant with company policies.
Serve as a point of contact for internal and external administrative matters.
Work with IT to oversee office technology, system access, and security measures.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Collaborate with sales, operations, and purchasing on financial visibility and controls.
Provide financial guidance to non-financial team members when needed.
Participate in strategic business discussions and special projects.
Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation or working toward one preferred.
Minimum 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or Controller-level role.
Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, and compliance.
Proficiency in NetSuite (or other ERP systems) and advanced Excel skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and lead a small team.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
