Summary



The Construction Safety Officer (CSO) implements safety procedures and monitors their effectiveness to keep everyone in their work environment safe from danger. They ensure that safety processes at the project site follow government rules and regulations to ensure a safe workplace. The CSO reports to the HSE Manager and supports the project site and Site Superintendent inconducting and monitoring work site inspections while ensuring workers follow safety requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities



Maintain a sense of responsibility and awareness for self and for the site workers. Supervise one or more Field CSO's on the project site to ensure a safe working environment for all workers. Ensure completion of Daily Field Level Hazard Assessment (PSA). Participate and record all JOSH, Site Toolbox, and Safety meetings and participate in weekly trade meetings as required to support Site Superintendent. Conduct, monitor and record work site inspections (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). Provide safety support by collecting and uploading daily PSA's; perform site and equipment. inspections; update story boards, lessons learned, SOP's; facilitate tool-box meetings and maintain statistics on workplace accidents and applicable investigations. Assist in onboarding newly hired employees for the project by providing them with on-site and safety orientations. Act as a liaison for all employees for all safety requirements including from the Site General Contractor, Superintendent(s) & Foremen. Manage, monitor, and update site worker training in On-Track inventory system and in Procore. Perform incident investigations for medical aid/lost time accidents, near-miss, high potential and/or property damage or as required by the GC. Report all onsite/workplace incidents and completes Form 7's for WCB reporting and participates in workplace investigations. Collaborate with HR to ensure RTW or GRTW programs are reviewed, followed, and managed accordingly. Place Material Request Forms (MRF) for the worksite. Update Note Vaultwith photos and site updates daily. Scan relevant information to update crane operating binders with rules, regulations, and directives as applicable. Reconcile asset counts on a monthly basis. Escalate and communicate safety issues and areas of concern to the HSE Manager and/or Site Superintendent. Responsible for safety purchase orders and support site staff for material purchases (safety admin). Ensure that all safety records are stored confidentially yet accessible to all required parties electronically. Influence positive safety improvements by way of education and a collaborative, coaching approach to mentor Field CSO's in support of their training and goals to become CSO's. Comply with WorkSafe (WCB) procedures and safety practices including on-site work practices and guidelines. Support the HSE Manager with reviewing and updating safety documents, periodically, as well as in conjunction with industry and regulation changes. Must have and wear personal protection equipment (PPE) and have a reliable means of transportation to work/project sites.

Skills and Experience:



NCSO required (advanced) Possess a combination of three (3) years of practical construction field experience, as well as practical and theoretical knowledge in various health and safety management skills and principles. Construction Safety Officer certificate/designation would be an asset. Experience in construction formwork using Peri and Doka systems is considered an asset. Experience supervising and coaching more junior CSO's. Knowledge and the ability to comply with all WorkSafe (WCB) procedures/safety practices including on site work practices and guidelines. Knowledge of construction industry and/or concrete forming is preferred. Proficient with MS Suite - Outlook, Word and Excel and previous experience working with related spreadsheets and reporting. Possess thorough investigative skills in conducting site inspections. Possess solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management skills. Ability to exercise good judgement and use effective communication skills in escalating issues to the HSE Manager or Site Superintendent Ability to take direction. Ability to understand and speak Spanish is considered an asset. Must be able to work outdoors on occasion in adverse weather conditions. Must be reliable, dependable, and detail oriented. Must be willing to learn and to continue to develop skills and accept more responsibility. Must be willing and able to work overtime as required including weekends.
