Overview:
On behalf of our client involved in building science engineering, we are seeking a Construction Safety Officer with onsite experience. This role is focused on hands-on safety, mentorship, safety operations, equipment management, first aid, and generally promoting a safe and healthy workplace. This role is based in Burnaby. BC but will eventually support all Canadian offices and some travel will be required.

What you will be doing:
General project and site safety

  • Assisting project teams with the development and implementation of project and site-specific safety plans and safe work procedures.
  • Conducting regular site audits and inspections, safety mentorship, toolbox meetings, and responding to project-related safety inquiries as needed.
  • Act as company\xe2\x80\x99s primary point of contact with WorkSafeBC and the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
  • Respond to, investigate, and report safety incidents and accidents.
Construction Management (CM) Project and Site Safety
  • Review, revise, and maintain site-specific safety program, including the amendment, creation, and archiving of templates as necessary.
  • Ensure on-site safety records for the CPM group are complete, up-to-date, and properly maintained.
  • Covering days off for company Site Superintendents to provide safety oversight and first aid on site.
  • Conduct site reviews supporting the Site Superintendent, to ensure all site-based safety requirements from trades, such as hazardous materials and fall protection plans, are current and in place.
Training & Orientations
  • Delivering safety orientations to staff in Western Canada, including office, lab, and equipment orientations.
  • Delivering and/or coordinating with third parties to provide hands-on and classroom safety training to staff, including fall protection training, first aid, swing stage safety, and respirator fit tests.
  • Overseeing the assignment and renewal of employee OHS training through the support of Group Leaders and staff.
  • Development or participation in the development of OHS training for deployment to employees, as needed.
Regional OHS Program
  • Acting as a primary First Aid Attendant for the Burnaby office when present.
  • Leading incident investigations in BC, and assisting with incident investigations corporately, as needed. This includes the implementation, assignment, and verification of necessary corrective and preventive actions born of those investigations.
  • Working closely with Talent and Culture to respond to WorkSafeBC orders, claims, inspections, and to submit incident reports and investigations according to WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Remain apprised with WorkSafeBC and OHS legislation, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Developing/assisting with the development of region-specific safe work practices and job procedures.
OHS Committees
  • Leading Vancouver\xe2\x80\x99s Regional OHS Committee
  • Participating on Vancouver Island\xe2\x80\x99s OHS Committee and the Corporate Safety Committee
  • Participation on these committees comes with accepting action items to further the agendas of the respective committees and company safety in general.
  • This may include participation of subcommittees on bigger initiatives (e.g., significant changes to existing programs or the implementation of new ones) or working with others across the company as a subject-matter expert on a particular topic.
Equipment
  • Managing PPE and assisting with lab equipment, including inventory, procurement, maintenance, inspection, storage, distribution, and decommissioning.
What you must have:
  • 5 years of construction industry experience, preferably with experience on larger-scale projects with multiple sub-trades.
  • 5 years experience as a First Aid Attendant (OFA level 2 certification or equivalent) and Construction Safety Officer (CSO Designation or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of BC and Ontario OHS legislation (nice to have), relevant codes, standards, and construction industry best practices, with emphasis on working at heights and fall protection, confined space safety, and hazardous materials exposure control.
  • Proven track record of delivering and overseeing Health and Safety training.
  • Experience conducting safety observations, inspections, audits, incident investigations, and implementing corrective and preventive action plans.
  • The ability to recognize and control safety hazards.
  • Must be practical, pro-active, solution-focused, and helpful with good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to perform well in critical high stress situations, and to work effectively with minimal direction.
  • Ability to multi-task, supervise, mentor and give directions to additional workers when required.
  • Available to work flexible hours in a construction site environment, and to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
