About Our Opportunity

As the Technical Specialist, you will be reporting to the Manager of Operations within the Digital Practices and Technology division of Nova Scotia Digital Services.

In response to the recently announced new system rollout \xe2\x80\x9cOne Patient One Record\xe2\x80\x9d, the firewall team has two new opportunities as Technical Specialists to support the additional deployment and management of firewall services.

This opportunity is seeking an individual to work within the Firewall team managing pre-existing installations and investigating preliminary fault isolations. Technical Specialist will assist in the installation and administration of firewalls, proxy servers, load balancers, web application firewalls and routers.

Primary Accountabilities

The primary responsibility of a Technical Specialist is to act as a technical resource in the management of security based services to ensure the optimal availability and performance of enterprise resources. A good understanding of networking, application delivery, traffic monitoring, and security vulnerabilities will form the basis for an individual that is eager to learn new systems and technologies. The incumbent would also be responsible for troubleshooting, researching and determining problems using various diagnostic tools.

This position will be required to provide after hours on-call support as part of a team rotation.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate you will have:

A Bachelors Degree in Information Technology plus three (3) years related experience; or graduation from a recognized Information Technology Program plus three (3) years and six (6) months related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

This position primary responsibility is to administer services provided by the Firewall team. The organization acknowledges this very specific environment/skill set required and is prepared to provide training, coaching, and mentoring for candidates with the right aptitude to learn and master new skills.

In addition, you have:

  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions and/or recommendations
  • Analytical skills to convert business requirements into business cases.
  • Ability to interview, facilitate working groups and develop strong relationships
  • Knowledge and experience with change management.
The following will be considered assets:
  • Knowledge of firewall systems administration (ie Palo Alto, Cisco, CheckPoint, etc)
  • Knowledge of load balancers and web application firewalls (ie F5, Azure, AWS, Citrix etc)
  • Basic network configurations with IPs and VLANs.
  • Understanding concepts of certificates.
  • Responsibilities for checking a resource\'s status, availability, and statistics,
  • Troubleshooting and determining problems using various diagnostic tools.
  • Managing logs and creating reports
  • Making necessary configuration changes.
  • Handling any problem related to hardware and basic performance.
  • Investigating basic device management connectivity problems
  • Opening support tickets with vendor and providing detailed reports relating to a current device status.
  • Must have a passion for researching existing systems and application services.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This is a 2-year TERM employment opportunity. The appointment status (\xe2\x80\x98term\xe2\x80\x99, \xe2\x80\x98temporary\xe2\x80\x99 or \xe2\x80\x98casual\xe2\x80\x99) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Salary Range: $2,640.65 - $3,215.50 Bi-Weekly
