Community Peace Officers ensure adherence to municipal bylaws, the Traffic Safety Act, and various provincial acts and legislation. They conduct patrols, investigate complaints, and ensure compliance with Strathcona County Bylaws and Provincial Statutes. This role involves administering regulated penalties to individuals or businesses, preparing court documents, and supporting other County departments, the RCMP, external agencies, and residents. Fostering community well-being, engagement, and education are primary areas of focus.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct safe and efficient road patrols throughout the County identifying infractions of County Bylaws and Provincial Statutes
Actively engage with the community through resident interactions and group involvement Enforce the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, and other Provincial legislation pertaining to moving violations, parking, road usage, off highway and commercial vehicles
Thoroughly investigate all complaints to ascertain validity and take appropriate action to bring an equitable solution of compliance or enforcement
Compile evidence and documentation for presentation in court in an accurate, professional and unbiased manner
Provide assistance to community residents, RCMP, County departments, and community stakeholders relative to bylaws, traffic safety, and community standards
Carry out safe work practices and adhere to other work-related and safety regulations
Qualifications and Skills:
Post secondary education in Law Enforcement/Security or related field preferred plus 5 years related experience; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Possess or ability to acquire Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment
Experience utilizing a variety of enforcement tools (dog poles, two-way radios, radar, laser, OC spray, baton, hand cuffs), innovative investigation techniques, and conducting inquiries in an administrative and regulatory environment
Knowledge of the court system, including documentation, presentation, and testimony
Knowledge of Strathcona County Bylaws, the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, and related Regulations and Provincial Statutes is considered an asset
Strong animal apprehension handling skills are considered an asset
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
Ability to demonstrate and interpret appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication
Strong written skills in the preparation of documents, reports, projects and the maintenance of records
Strong critical thinking, conflict management and de-escalation skills, with the ability to work under pressure
Excellent analytical skills including the expertise to research open source and social media data
Ability to collaborate with integrity, deliver service excellence, and embrace diversity and inclusiveness within the community
Strong commitment to Strathcona County's Corporate Values, professionalism, and community engagement
Act as a positive ambassador for Strathcona County
Demonstrated proficiency in SharePoint, Microsoft Office suite and related software and computer equipment
Conditions of Employment:
Must be able to obtain or provide proof of successful completion of the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) physical standard test (with a completed time below 4 minutes and 45 seconds)
Currently possess or ability to acquire RCMP Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance
Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's license and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits
First Aid and CPR Certification
Must be able to wear a full-face respirator while on duty
Shift work is a requirement working days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays
