Job Summary
The Community Health Nurse I (Community Mental Health Nurse) is an integral member of the Geriatric Psychiatry Day Hospital interdisciplinary team located at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre. The primary purpose of the position is to provide clinical nursing services to a geriatric population who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness and are living in the community. This includes assessment, coordination of services, referrals and intervention (i.e. education, consultation, advocacy, counseling, crisis intervention and home visits). He/she will also be expected to develop education on geriatric mental health issues for various groups. The position will also provide relief to registered nurses in the geriatric psychiatry day hospital program when they are unavailable, completing group and individual therapy to clients attending geriatric psychiatry day hospital programming.

Occasionally lifts objects Regularly performs counselling sessions with clients and or family members with a requirement to sit for prolonged periods.
May require constant sitting for meetings, documentation, or computer research.
Constantly uses fine finger/precision, auditory, sensory and visual concentration to provide and conduct assessments, observe/monitor clients, provide feedback to clients and other health care providers and complete documentation.
A high level of attentiveness and vigilance is required when working alone and during counselling sessions to ensure safety or detect impending danger/harm to self or client.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved/recognized post-secondary nursing education program is required.*
Current and continuing practicing license with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) and BLS Certification is required.
Experience working in Public Health nursing is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and able to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver\'s License and the use of a private vehicle are conditions of employment.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.

*Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor Degree in Nursing must be willing to complete an approved/recognized post diploma/certificate program in Public Health/Community Health at the first available opportunity as determined by the employer. The successful applicant must successfully complete the post diploma/certificate program within the program\'s designated timeframe and will start work in the position upon successful completion. Funding to complete the program will be provided by NLHS.
