Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm (37.5 hrs/week)

Compensation:

$27.50-$31.50/hour

The North End Women's Centre (NEWC) is a place of connection, safety, and healing for women and gender-diverse community members in Winnipeg's North End. We are rooted in harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, and the belief that healing happens in relationship, culture, and community.

We are looking for a

Community Counsellor

who brings heart, humility, and a holistic lens to their work--supporting the Spirit, Emotions, Mind, and Body of those who come through our doors.

What You'll Do



As our Community Counsellor, you will be an essential part of our Healing & Wellness team. Your work will include:

Direct Support & Counselling



Provide drop-in and short-to-medium-term counselling to participants experiencing trauma, substance use challenges, homelessness, or gender-based violence. Offer crisis counselling as needed with grounding, safety, and care. Develop collaborative counselling plans based on participants' goals. Facilitate or co-facilitate groups, circles, and land-based healing activities. Share information, resources, and referrals to help participants meet their basic needs. Model healthy relationships, boundaries, and communication.

Teamwork & Collaboration



Participate in team meetings, group debriefings, and case consultations. Work closely with the Program Manager, Clinical Consultant, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to support participants' healing journeys. Share knowledge of emerging community trends and needs.

Administration & Accountability



Maintain accurate case notes within 24 hours. Track group outcomes in alignment with funder requirements. Participate in supervision, training opportunities, and performance reviews. Attend community events and committees that support NEWC's mission.

What You Bring



We're looking for someone who is grounded, adaptable, reflective, and passionate about community care.

Education & Experience



Post-secondary education in social services (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience providing counselling to individuals impacted by trauma, substance use, homelessness, and gender-based violence. Experience facilitating groups or programming for diverse communities. Understanding of colonization, residential schools, the 60s Scoop, the child welfare system, and ongoing genocide of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Experience with Indigenous teachings, ceremonies, land-based healing, and Reconciliation work. Knowledge of inner-city realities; experience in the North End is an asset. Experience working in congregate living settings is an asset.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work calmly and flexibly in a high-stress environment. Non-judgmental, participant-centered, grounded in cultural humility. Skilled in de-escalation and crisis response. Knowledgeable in harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and various counselling styles. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to work independently andcollaboratively. Consistency, reliability, and the capacity to build trust. Comfortable with basic computer and administrative tasks.
