Salary band: $52,626 - $65,782/year

The incumbent will collaborate with the Community Assistance Team in all areas of emergency management and can deploy in a variety of functions including supporting the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Each Community Advisor has experience working in and with local, regional, or provincial emergency response structure. The Community Advisors can facilitate relationships to address short-term needs and support building capacity emergency response capacity within community. They can fill planning and operations role in EOCs at any level. The Community Advisor is a capable leader and effective communicator, with an ability to foster community relationships. The Community Advisor can provide solutions to complex issues with innovation and forward thinking. This position reports directly to the Manager, Community Assistance. This role will support relationship building and disaster planning while helping to increase community resilience in BC. The Community Assistance Advisor will also support community-led readiness and response activities.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the continued development of the Community Assistance Team pilot project.
  • Guide communities through completing a community assessment to build an action-based resilience plan that is tailored to the risks, needs, values and capacity of each community;
  • Support community partners with disaster preparedness planning and community engagement initiative focused on a community-led approach.
  • Lead community partners through the community assistance framework and process, providing resources and connections to communities in support of their action-based resilience plan.
  • Bring different areas of expertise together for assessing, planning, and providing solutions.
  • Provide information management tool for sharing information with community partners.
  • Work to meet a community's identified needs and priorities, coordinate with all CRC programs to identify possible types of assistance and to also determine the CRC's own capacities regarding our ability to deliver them.
  • Synthesize information and write reports that are easily understood and include clear recommendations for action.
  • Contribute to external and internal report writing; and to operational plan performance indicators.
What we're looking for:
  • University degree in a related discipline. Graduate Degree is an asset, but an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience of relevant work experience in emergency management operations, humanitarian, or community development sectors.
  • Experience with Indigenous community engagement considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical support and monitoring of community-based approaches to development.
  • Demonstrated experience with information management and tool development.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting community level needs assessments and planning including implementation of programming.
  • If driving for society business; a valid driver's license is required with a satisfactory drivers' abstract.
  • Experience conducting community level needs assessments and planning including implementation of programming.
  • Experience working in an Emergency Operations Centre and emergency management during disaster events
Working conditions:
  • Most of the work is performed in an environment which is mostly clean and comfortable as this is a remote working position.
  • Employee must live in British Columbia or Yukon.
  • Potential for responding in hardship conditions, as well as difficult and unstable conditions (environment, physical, social, etc.) and uncomfortable conditions (noise, odors, smoke, humidity, vulnerable community members). If working in a response site, health and safety considerations will be outlined prior to the assignment.
  • Ability to respond during non-traditional hours (i.e. late nights or weekends) and long hours of work in a demanding context.
  • Deploy to response operations as required within British Columbia and Yukon and potentially the rest of Canada is required.
  • Ability to be on-call when scheduled, as required.
