Position Overview The Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Communications and Marketing Specialist for approximately 12 months. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications in the Werklund School of Education, the incumbent works closely with the Werklund School Communications and Marketing team and others to provide efficient and effective marketing communications support for Werklund School of Education programs as well as school initiatives and events. This position will work with Advancement Communications and other marketing and communications staff across campus to build and enhance the profile and reputation of the Werklund School of Education within the University of Calgary, by delivering on the objectives set out in the University of Calgary\'s marketing strategies and key strategic commitments. The Communications and Marketing Specialist assists in the development of both short- and long -term marketing and communications strategies to build awareness of the Werklund School of Education and promote all programs and activities through compelling communications, marketing and advertising deliverables in a variety of media, including print, digital, social, interactive, and mobile. Operating with minimal supervision, the Communications and Marketing Specialist will be fully responsible for the quality of the work. Frequent interaction with senior leadership, academic and support staff, students and external stakeholders, will require a high strategic level of discretion, flexibility and integrity to ensure positive outcomes. Proper time management is essential, as there will be multiple concurrent deadlines, and tasks within an environment of heavy workload and continuous change. The nature of the work requires a proactive leadership work style and demonstrated initiative ability. The Communication and Marketing Specialist will possess a keen appetite and aptitude for new and emerging marketing and communications trends and techniques. The ability to interpret research findings and marketing requirements to develop creative concepts that increase engagement of target audiences. The primary purpose of this position is to enhance the local, national and international reputation and support the strategic direction of the Werklund School of Education. The incumbent is also responsible for adherence to and alignment with University of Calgary brand communications and marketing approaches. They will be required to work with senior school leadership, faculty members, administrative staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, external partners, contractors, as well as university-wide marketing and communications professionals, and media outlets. The position uses a high level of concentration and requires judgment in decision-making while implementing internal and external communications that impact the profile and reputation of the Werklund School of Education and the university. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop communication and marketing plans, in collaboration with the Senior Manager, the Marketing Strategist, and unit administration, to build awareness of the Werklund School of Education, support Werklund School programs, specifically graduate and undergraduate French programs, as well as school initiatives and events, targeted to engage potential and current students (both undergraduate and graduate) and community partners, as well as faculty members, alumni, and other external and internal partners
  • Develop high-quality, accurate marketing materials with timely, relevant, accurate and creative content using University and Werklund School supported platforms
  • Support the design and content development for the Werklund School website, in collaboration with the Marketing Strategist, Content and Media Specialist and Web Designer/Administrator
  • Develop marketing collateral across social media platforms
  • Lead the development of marketing and/or promotional collateral, for both print and digital applications, promotional items, and templates (evites, newsletters, posters), as required, including production and delivery of materials
  • Support the training of academic staff and students in utilizing official design templates
  • Develop and write quality and timely marketing materials, for both print and digital applications
  • Review of event sponsorship fulfillments and ad placements
  • Support the execution of Werklund School events and programs as required, including agendas or programs, invitation and registration of guests, speakers and/or participants
  • Develop and execute the promotional collateral as required for all school initiatives and events and programs
  • Prepare meeting and events materials as required (EBBs, posters, slide decks, etc.)
  • Coordinate photography, graphic design, audio/video production, and social media activities as required and in coordination with the communications team
  • Work with the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications, to develop marketing, communication and outreach budgets and oversee expenditures as required
  • Prepare and present status reports, correspondence and other documentation; provide timely and accurate information and updates to senior leadership
  • Adhere to UCalgary brand standards and ensure others are informed of appropriate usage
  • Produce analytics on events, web traffic, social media
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s degree or diploma in communications, marketing, or related field; a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the marketing and communications field, preferably with exposure to digital marketing channels (web and social media)
  • Ability to plan and execute small to medium marketing and communications projects from end-to-end
  • Proven understanding of integrated marketing campaigns is an asset
  • Experience in producing a variety of communication and marketing vehicles aimed at various audiences such as: external/internal communications (knowledge of CP style), marketing collateral, web, email, e-newsletters and social media content
  • Exceptional writing, copyediting and proofreading skills with high attention to detail
  • Experience working with Subject Matter Experts, translating complex concepts and jargon into accessible communications
  • Experience working with Marketo or similar marketing platforms
  • Experience with design and layout tools such as Adobe CS (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and strong working knowledge of design principles
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office
  • Strong understanding of digital analytic tracking and reporting
  • Web content management (using Drupal 8) and basic HTML skills would be considered assets
  • Basic photography and videography skills would be considered assets
  • Self-directed, well organized, with strong communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels while handling multiple priorities and competing deadlines
  • Willingness and ability to learn new marketing and communications skills and tools
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience in an educational institution is an asset
  • Well-versed in event promotion
  • French language is considered an asset
