JOB SUMMARY
The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. Currently the School has 36 core and joint faculty located on campus and at healthcare research institutes, 400+ undergraduate and undergraduate students, 20+ administrative staff and several research core service facilities. The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation, aspiring to be a global leader in the field. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology.
The artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine laboratory (AIM Lab) at the SBME seeks a motivated part-time Communications Manager. This position will develop and disseminate various promotional materials as well as prepare, edit and proof grant proposals and annual reports related to AIM Lab's research and must liaise with funding agencies.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The successful candidate will report to the Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Ali Bashashati or a designate.
WORK PERFORMED
Marketing and CommunicationsDevelops promotional materials for AIM Lab. This could include writing and editing materials to engage with the public and potential donors.
Liaises with the laboratory members (staff, students, PIs) to develop content (for AIM lab website and social platforms) based on the scientific projects that are being conducted at the AIM Lab.
Develops and advises on appropriate social media strategies to communicate the lab findings with the public and media personnel.
Manages the AIM Lab's website and social media content by soliciting, editing and or writing, to ensure content is up-to-date.
Collects and aggregates grant progress reports from researchers in the lab. Formats and submits them as per the requirements of granting agencies.
Engages with patient partners (for example, through the Gynecological Cancer Initiative's (GCI) Patient Family Advocacy Program) to co-create promotional material on the use of AI in medicine. The promotional material will be disseminated through the GCI and AIM lab's social media platforms.
Responsible for graphic design, illustration work and infographics in support of online, print, and digital projects that showcases AIM lab's scientific projects on social medial platforms.
Liaise with other communications staff at the departmental, faculty, and institutional levels.
Administrative ManagementAssists the PI with day-to-day lab management tasks, including employee onboarding, data management, formatting grant proposals and annual reports, and ensuring documentation complies with guidelines.
Performs other related duties as required.
DECISION MAKING
Makes decisions regarding writing and editing and posting communication materials.
CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR/JUDGMENT
Must be able to work independently and exercise strong judgment in decision making. Incomplete or inaccurate information; ineffectual or poor messaging in communication content could result in poor reflection of the AIM lab and adversely effect its staff, faculty, students and research. This position must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with its internal and external members. The consequence of error in these areas could be very serious for the university as it concerns the public image of AIM Lab and affiliated institutions.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards. Frequent communication with the PI is required to ensure lab standards are followed accordingly.

Minimum Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in communications or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Capability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and data security.
