Position Summary:



Yaq?it ?aknuq?i'it First Nation (Tobacco Plains Band) is a rural First Nation located near Grasmere, BC, in one of the most beautiful and natural parts of British Columbia. Yaq?it ?aknuq?i'it is seeking a Communications & Governance Officer to support organizational transparency and foster effective communication between leadership, staff, membership, and the broader community. As a key liaison for internal and external communications, the successful candidate will play a central role in promoting clear, values based messaging. This position also contributes to strong and transparent governance through tasks such as document coordination, Council support, and records management. Key Responsibilities:




Draft and coordinate internal and public communications, including newsletters, notices, website updates, and print materials. Maintain consistent voice and messaging aligned with the Nation's values and leadership priorities. Create and manage content templates for department updates and community engagement. Ensure timely, accurate, and culturally respectful communication to all members. Track and manage communications across platforms (print, social media, website, etc.). Serve as the primary liaison for external communications contractors, coordinating internal updates and staff input to ensure timely and accurate submissions. Support governance functions, including preparing briefing notes, Council summaries, and other related materials. Maintain awareness of upcoming deadlines, events, and strategic priorities to help staff determine when Council input or approval is required. Maintain internal systems for tracking governance tools, policy updates, and Council communications. Help communicate policy changes and governance decisions in accessible formats for staff and members. Support implementation of records management systems and ensure accessible storage of templates and governance documentation. Assist in creating onboarding and reference guides for governance and communications functions. Collaborate with Shared Services, governance teams, and department leads to ensure strong communication workflows and governance support. Other duties, as assigned.




Qualifications:



Required Education and Experience:




Post-secondary education in Communications, Indigenous Governance, Public Administration, or related field preferred. Minimum 2 years experience with communication or governance work in a First Nations or Indigenous context is an asset. Demonstrated coordination and communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication platforms. Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean drivers abstract. Criminal Record Check (will be completed upon hiring).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:




Strong writing and editing skills, with attention to tone, clarity, and cultural appropriateness. Project coordination and deadline management. Understanding of First Nations governance and communications practices. Professionalism, discretion, and ability to handle confidential materials. Strong organizational and administrative abilities. Expertise with communications tools and platforms. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Knowledge of First Nation governance structures and community engagement practices. Sensitivity and understanding of the unique cultural environment of a First Nation organization.

Compensation:




Wage will be commensurate with skills and experience, ranging from $34.50 - $43.70 hourly. Medical, Dental, Disability and Life Insurance plans. Pension Program. Standard benefits as a Federally Regulated Employer.
