Communications Coordinator
A rewarding, exciting and challenging experience awaits! We are looking for a Communications Coordinator that wishes to apply their creative energy and passion to the Town of Slave Lake! This role will provide the individual an opportunity to provide multiple project-based communications solutions and strategies. Reporting to Manager of Economic Development and Communications, the Communications Coordinator plays an integral role in supporting the town\xe2\x80\x99s communications function and ensuring the organization\xe2\x80\x99s communications objectives effectively align with organizational goals and strategies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with management and Council to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on our target audience.
  • Work with the Manager of Communications and Economic Development to develop and schedule timely and appropriate communications for evolving and emerging issues, projects, services, and events in accordance with Council direction.
  • Proactively identify issues or information to share with Town residents.
  • Assistance with the preparation of correspondence, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other marketing material that communicates the organization\'s activities, products and/or services.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with journalists and maintain a media database.
  • Process owner for Council Meetings \xe2\x80\x93 video content, mics and system etc.
  • Assist in the application process of grant funding programs available to the Town.
  • Assist the Manager of Communications and Economic Development foster positive relationships with media, elected officials, and community groups including collaboration with regional partners and key stakeholders.
  • Other related work and projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field
  • 2 years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations or public information position
  • 2-3 years related experience in the emergency preparedness field or other relevant experience would be an asset.
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset.
  • Municipal Election experience is an asset.
  • Media relations and event management experience
  • Experience in dealing with government officials is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media
  • Good background knowledge of allied fields such as social media and web-based communications
  • Ability to work in a very fast paced team environment.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence (or provincial equivalent).
SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Excellent computer skills, specifically in desktop publishing Microsoft Office, social media, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Good interpersonal skills in working with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work with tight timelines.
  • A minimum of two years related experience combined with strong writing, editing, and consulting skills as well as a good working knowledge of communications planning and production techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and outside resources are essential.
  • Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, broadcasting or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Access to and work with information to highly confidential nature.

  • Occasional light lifting.
  • Long periods of sitting.

  • Good lighting, temperature, and noise control.
  • Normal working day consists of a maximum of 7.5 hours; however, occasional extended hours may be required.

  • Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced
  • Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Town Policies and all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
