The Science Education unit of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) is committed to working in partnership with McGill members and community partners to co-develop sustainable Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) programming to engage youth from communities who are underrepresented at McGill. The Sinclair Laird-McGill STEAM program is under development to build connections between McGill University, community organizations and members, and youth in the Parc Ex neighbourhood.

GOALS OF SINCLAIR-LAIRD-McGILL STEAM PROGRAM:

Create opportunities for elementary students (grades 5 & 6) in a Parc Ex EMSB (English) school to develop relationships with McGill education and science students on a weekly basis. Co-plan STEAM-related projects that are grounded in youths' interests and concerns. Support grades 5 & 6 youth in their science-learning as they begin to navigate their transition to high school and help them explore higher education opportunities. Connect McGill education and science student volunteers to the members and organizations of the Parc Ex community. Provide McGill students with volunteer and mentorship opportunities to engage in community-based learning to enrich their McGill experience.

Hiring Unit:
Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE)

Position Summary:

Recruit, train and support 8 McGill students (4 from Faculty of Education, 4 from Arts, Science or Engineering) to volunteer as mentors with youth from Sinclair Laird Elementary School in weekly after school events at the school.

Be present at after-school sessions from 2:30-4pm once a week to facilitate program and supervise volunteers. Program runs from October 3rd to December 9th and from January 30th to April 7th (at least, possible to continue into June).

Debrief with volunteers weekly, and coordinate with Sinclair Laird's projects coordinator and Before and After School Enrichment program.

Work with the cooperating teachers and project coordinator at Sinclair Laird and with McGill supervisors (Dr. Allison Gonsalves and Emily Sprowls, DISE) to plan and coordinate weekly activities and programs.

Connect with community organizations to bring in programs that support youths' interests and learning.

Work with supervisors to co-develop and facilitate volunteer orientation/training events in late September and late January and Volunteer Reflection and social events in November and April Plan an end of term "family and community day" where members of the school community are invited to see presentations from the youth about their projects.

Plan a day at McGill in Spring 2023 where youth will visit the science education labs for activities, and visit a lab in the faculty of science.

Perform regular administrative duties (i.e. tracking volunteer hours, answering emails, presenting updates at weekly team meetings with supervisors) and draft an program evaluation report.

Education/experience requirements: B.A., B.Sc or B.Ed

You have an undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering, Education or Arts, and you have experience and enthusiasm for public engagement in science, and learning science alongside youth

You care about experiential learning both for university students and for youth in their communities, and have demonstrated experience working in these contexts.

You have experience planning and conducting science inquiry with youth (camps, after-school programming, tutoring, science teaching, science museums)

You care about social justice, and you are committed to putting equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into practice

You have some knowledge of science inquiry methods, project-based learning, design-thinking and you are committed to helping youth develop their own ideas and pursue their own interests

You have demonstrated leadership experience in community-based work and/or coordination of collaborative projects

You have experience developing and implementing relational projects involving people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse skillsets and experiences

You have a strong interest and experience in education, mentorship, and youth support, especially with upper-elementary-aged youth

Motivated to work independently and ability to take initiative to plan programming and do outreach to community groups

Additional qualifying skills and abilities:

Lived experience in and/or knowledge of the Parc Ex community, its organizations, and diverse cultural communities

Experience coordination volunteers and facilitating training workshops

Spoken and written French fluency/fluency in other languages (especially those used in Parc Ex neighbourhood)

Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.

Interest in education and learning about how people learn.

Minimum Education and Experience: High School Diploma 2 Years Related Experience

Hourly Salary: (AMUSE C) $25.00
