The Department of East Asian Studies continues some of the best traditions of East Asian studies with a critical combination of humanities and social science approaches. Members of the department contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching throughout the University, holding joint appointments with a variety of other departments within the University and the Royal Ontario Museum. Our department is located on the downtown campus of the University of Toronto at the heart of one of North America\xe2\x80\x99s most cosmopolitan and exciting cities.

Your opportunity:

Under the direction of the Chair the Communications and Events Coordinator provides a wide range of communications and events support for the Department of East Asian Studies. The Communications and Events Coordinator produces articles and promotional materials for the department, maintains and updates the department website and social media sites and gathers and edits content for the departmental newsletter. The incumbent will also work with the Chair to coordinate a range of events and activities and will serve as a liaison to interested groups within the University and the community.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms
  • Probing for information from clients to determine communication and outreach needs
  • Verifying that content is consistent with brand identity guidelines
  • Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming
  • Obtaining consent from participants for photography, videography, interviews, etc.
  • Maintaining a database
  • Coordinating tasks for projects and other strategic initiatives with stakeholders
  • Handling expenses for events; Directing the work of volunteers in defined activities

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor\'s Degree in communications or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years\xe2\x80\x99 of relevant communications and events experience with a focus on public interfacing on behalf of an organization.
  • Experience drafting, editing and preparing a variety of written documentation, communications, and marketing materials including the ability to concisely summarize information and prepare original correspondence.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of social and multimedia platforms, channels, trends, and capabilities.
  • Experience updating and maintaining websites.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver), and Content Management Software (WordPress and Drupal) or equivalent.
  • Experience with event logistics, including the use of scheduling software and online platforms to assist in the logistics of organizing meetings and events.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information in clear, understandable language.
  • Excellent and effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative to conceptualize and organize event activities.
  • Demonstrated strong skills in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive) and Sharepoint.
  • Demonstrated skills with online video/audio conferencing applications (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to adapt to new and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated strong client service orientation and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing operational needs, and to contribute to a positive team and departmental culture.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Prior communications experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience with producing a podcast.
  • Experience using communication tools to interface with faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students.
  • Experience engaging with alumni through communication and events initiatives.
  • Prior experience executing professional development events and/or lecture series for students.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 09 - $65,407 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,646. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
